Starting an Online Business
• The road to creating a successful online store
can be a difficult if unaware of ecommerce
principles and what ecommerce is supposed
to do for your online business.
• Researching and understanding the guidelines
required to properly implement an e-business
plan is a crucial part to becoming successful
with online store building.
Starting an Online Business
• Starting and operating an Internet business is
surprisingly similar to operating any other
business.
Low Start-up Costs –
• When you decide to start a business online,
you can do so with as little as a few hundred
dollars and a good idea.
• Like any business, it takes creativity, planning,
money and hard work to be successful.
Starting an Online Business
Multiple Skill Requirements –
• Suddenly it's not enough to simply have a
good product or service.
• To use the Internet effectively, you now need
to have or be able to acquire skills in graphic
design, web server technology, programming,
and a brand new marketing medium
Starting an Online Business
International Audience –
• Even if you do not think of your business as an
international business, you must recognize
that your visitors are likely to be from all over
the world.
• You should consider whether or not you are
prepared for international shipping and other
transactions with countries other than your
own.

Marketing Strategy• Lastly, you need a marketing strategy for
driving targeted traffic to your site and a
means of inviting repeat customers. If you are
new to ecommerce keep things simple- know
your limitations.
Advantages of Ecommerce
1. Overcome Geographical Limitations
• If you have a physical store, you are limited by
the geographical area that you can service.
• With an ecommerce website, the whole world
is your playground.
Advantages of Ecommerce
2. Locate the Product Quicker
• It is no longer about pushing a shopping cart
to the correct passageway or investigation for
the desired product.
• On an ecommerce website, customers can
click through sensitive navigation or use a
search box to immediately narrow down their
product search.
Advantages of Ecommerce
3. Eliminate Travel Time and Cost
• It is not unusual for customers to travel long
distances to reach their preferred physical
store.
• Ecommerce allows them to visit the same
store virtually, with a few mouse clicks.
Advantages of Ecommerce
4. Lower Costs
• One of the most tangible positives of ecommerce is the
lowered cost.
• A part of these lowered costs could be passed on to
customers in the form of discounted prices.
• Here are some of the ways that costs can be reduced with
ecommerce:
Personnel
The automation of checkout, billing, payments, inventory
management, and other operational processes, lowers the
number of employees required to run an ecommerce
setup.
Real Estate
An ecommerce merchant does not need a prominent physical
location.
Advantages of Ecommerce
5. Provide Comparison Shopping
• Ecommerce facilitates comparison shopping.
• There are several online services that allow
customers to browse multiple ecommerce
merchants and find the best prices.
6. Remain Open All the Time
• Store timings are now 24/7/365.
• Ecommerce websites can run all the time.
• From the merchant's point of view, this increases
the number of orders they receive.
• From the customer's point of view, an "always
open" store is more suitable.
Advantages of Ecommerce
7. Create Targeted Communication
• Using the information that a customer provides in
the registration form, and by placing cookies on
the customer's computer, an ecommerce
merchant can access a lot of information about
its customers.
• This, in turn, can be used to communicate
relevant messages.
• An example: If you are searching for a certain
product on Amazon.com, you will automatically
be shown listings of other similar products. In
addition, Amazon.com may also email you about
related products.
ELECTRONIC MARKETS
• A market is a network of interactions and
relationships where information, products,
services, any payments are exchanged.
• In EM the marketplace is electronic, the
business center is not a physical building.
• A network-based location where business
interactions occur.
• The EM is the place where shoppers and
sellers meet.
ELECTRONIC MARKETS
• The market handle all the necessary transactions
including:
• Order Placing
• Transfer of money between banks
• Shipments
• In EM the participants are:
•
•
•
•
Transaction handlers
Buyers
Broker ( Agents )
Sellers
What is eBay?
• eBay is the world's online marketplace; a
place for buyers and sellers to come together
and trade almost anything.
How eBay works
• A seller lists an item on eBay, most anything
from antiques to cars, books to sporting
goods.
• The seller chooses to accept only bids for the
item (an auction-type listing) or to offer the
Buy It Now option, which allows buyers to
purchase the item right away at a fixed price.
How eBay works
• In an online auction, the bidding opens at a
price the seller specifies and remains on eBay
for a certain number of days.
• Buyers then place bids on the item. When the
listing ends, the buyer with the highest bid
wins.
• In a Buy It Now listing, the first buyer willing
to pay the seller's price gets the item.
