Center 1: The Skeletal System
Procedure:
1. Read pages 12-19 in your text book.
2. Answer questions 1-6 in your packet.
3. Use the deer skull to answer question 8.
4. Examine the items in the bag labeled Joint Movement Samples. Use
them to answer questions 8-22.
5. Look at the cross section of the cow femur. Answer questions 23-30.
6. Use a laptop to watch the Video Field Trip: Bones, Muscles, and Skin.
Answer questions 31-33.
7. Identify the particular bones in numbers 34-57. You may use the
internet to find a diagram of the skeletal system.

Center 2: The Muscular System
Procedure:
1) Try to sit still without moving a muscle. Despite how hard you try,
you can’t. List some muscle movements, ones you can control
and ones you can’t in number 1.
2) Read pages 24-48 in text.
3) Complete the chicken wing dissection. Answer questions 2-4.
Materials: paper towels, scissors, dissecting tray, uncooked chicken wing, gloves, goggles
Procedure:
1) Dry the chicken wing with paper towels and place it on the tray.
2) Carefully extend the wing to find how many parts it has. Draw a diagram of Look at the external
structure. Identify the shoulder, upper arm, elbow, lower arm, and hand (wingtip).
3) Use scissors to remove the skin. Make sure to cut only through the skin.
4) Examine the muscles, which are the bundles of pink tissue around the bones. Find the 2 groups
of muscles in the upper arm.
5) Hold the arm down at the shoulder and alternately pull on each muscle group. Observe what
happens.
6) Find the 2 groups of muscles in the lower arm. Hold down the arm at the elbow and alternately
pull on each muscle group.
7) Make a diagram of the wing’s muscles. Make sure to label it.
8) Find the tendons-shiny white tissue at the end of the muscles. Notice what parts the tendons
connect. Add the tendons to the diagram.
Optional: (Complete if time allows.)
9) Remove the muscles and tendons carefully. Find the ligaments, which are whitish ribbon
shaped structures between bones.
10) Make a diagram of the bones and ligaments. Make sure to label it.
11) Dispose of the chicken parts according to the teacher’s directions and wash hands.

5) Answer questions 5-17.

Center 3: Skin
Procedure:
1) Use a hand lens to observe the skin on your hand. Complete
question 1.
2) Read text pages 30-35 and complete number 2-25.
3) Watch TED Ed video: Why do we have to wear sunscreen?

4) Answer questions: 26-32.
5) Complete an experiment to test the effectiveness of some sunscreens.
Materials: Observation bag, 4 Ziploc bags, 8 UV beads, 3 different sunscreens, cotton balls, sharpie, 4
index cards
Procedure:
1) Bring the bag labeled Observation to the window. Pull out the string of UV beads and
observe what happens when the beads are exposed to UV rays.
2) Predict which sunscreen will work best.
3) **Make sure to shield the UV beads from the light for as long as possible.**
4) Label bag 1: Control (No Sunscreen).
5) Label the other 3 bags with the SPF of each sunscreen.
6) Use a new cotton ball to apply sun screen to the appropriate bag.
7) Quickly place 4 UV beads in each bag. Place an index card in the bag, on top of the beads to
shield them from the light.
8) Carefully carry them to the window sill.
9) Warning: This will happen very quickly! You might want to use the iPad to video the
reaction so you can watch it again to analyze the results. At the same time, remove all 4
index cards and observe the results carefully.
10) Record your finings and clean up. Return all UV beads to the bags.
6) Answer numbers 33-36.
7) Read text pages 166-169 and complete numbers 37-51.

Procedure:
1) Use the laptop to watch the video field trip: Food and Digestion.
2) Read text pages 60-65 and answer questions 1-14.
3) Complete the Discover activity on page 68: Which Surface is
Larger?
4) Use a hand lens to closely observe the white duster mitt.
5) Read text pages 68-71
6) Answer questions 15-32.
7) Use the materials in the bag labeled “Make Your Own Digestive
System” to do just that. Make sure the organs go in order. Answer
questions 33-41 as you go.
