COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Cosmetology program focuses on foundation knowledge and skills
necessary to take the Michigan State Board of Cosmetology exam. Students will receive about
350 hours toward their Michigan State of Cosmetology license. Students will gain hands-on
experience by working on mannequins and clients. This is a post-secondary program.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Understand the History of Cosmetology, Life Skills, Professional Image Skills, and Communication skills
nessary to become a successful Hairstylist.
2) Identify the anatomy of skin, hair, and nails.
3) Implement Disinfection/Sanitation procedures required in the Theory Classroom and the Hair Clinic.
4) Have knowledge of the basics of Chemistry and Electricity.
5) Master the basics of Haircutting, Hair Design, Hairstyling, Braiding, & Wigs.
6) Possess the technical and theory skills necessary to perform Haircuts, Hairstyles, Perms, and Haircolor.
7) Understand the chemistry needed to safely use Haircolor and Chemical Texture Services.
8) Recognize various Nail, Scalp, and Skin diseases.
9) Possess the technical skills to perform Facials, Manicures, and Pedicures.
10) Have knowledge of test preparation and procedures for the State of Michigan Cosmetology
practical and theory exam.
11) Understand the business aspect of Cosmetology.
12) Discern between professional and unprofessional with-in the Cosmetology Industry.
13) Create resume, business card, and portfiolio to be used when applying for employment in the
Cosmetology Industry.
