Annotated Bibliography: Gun Control

In this essay I will discuss gun control, which many people care about deeply. Gun control is a controversial issue. It involves the control of guns. Some people think that it is a great idea, while others think it is a horrible idea. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "A coward is much more exposed to quarrels than a man of spirit." The same applies to gun control. Gun control should be enforced strictly in all American cities. Many mistakenly believe that individual gun ownership is a right in this country so guns and gun control have been sadly intertwined with the concept of liberty. In fact, gun control has little to do with autonomy; it is an issue of public safety, of life and death. We should apply the strictest possible controls on gun ownership in order to curb violent crime and mitigate accidental deaths.

Cox, Chris. "Gun Control." American Rifleman . Magazine Article. March 20, 2012

This magazine article gave me inside information about the previous bills that have been passed dealing with gun control. It also gave me directly related information about President

Obama signing bills into action that had gun control policies in them, which forced him to pass them.

The author sounds reasonable when he goes over basic information about the second amendment and how to use your second amendment rights freely as they were intended. It also covers recent second amendment decisions by the Senate. This affects every American citizen and their right to bear arms.

This article gave me the background information I needed to write about the second amendment, and all the information I needed about the specific details of the amendment. This information was significantly important to my essay and allowed me to provide evidence and examples about recent gun control policies actually taking place in the government.

“Gun Control.”

Current Issues: Macmillan Social Science Library. Detroit: Gale, 2010 Gale

Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 14 May 2012.

In this article, the issue of being able to own guns has a lot of controversies because of all the crimes that are happening at the moment. Gun control laws are meant to help prevent violence and prevent the purchase of guns to any person that has any type of criminal record. The laws may vary depending on the state that you are in and the federals laws. In the United States there has not being an agreement regarding gun control laws which has led to more violence because the states are not following the correct registrations and rules to sell firearms.

This article offers different points of views of why there is so much violence in the

United States. The author is motivated to writer this piece since the laws have loopholes allowing people to buy without requiring a background check. A person who wants to buy a firearm is able to go online and buy them without a background check making this situation more dangerous because it means that anyone is able to buy a firearm no matter their criminal record.

They are also are able to go to private gun shows where they are able to purchase guns and not reveal their criminal record or run a background check. There are also especial laws that prevent the purchase of shotguns, semiautomatic rifles and other assault rifles.

This article opens my eyes and shows me that America may be going in the wrong direction to stop gun control. This is very useful because I’ll be able to use this to explain what

Gun Control should not come to.

"Republican Party on Gun Control." Object Moved . Web. 20 Mar. 2012.

This article explains in great detail the current stance on gun control of the Republican party. Since the Republican Party plays such a large roll on gun control debates, it shows the

basic political platform of the party and all future projects that will be addressed, along with just stating old and current laws related to gun control.

The author explains that there are not only countries that are part of this crime, but also the countries who are trying to stop it, and the reasons behind both parties’ actions. Firearm market values are also covered so that the reader may get an understanding of the monetary benefits of this illegal trade.

After reading around on this website, I was able to show my readers the difference between Republican and Democratic views on the issue of Gun Control, which was useful to the direction of my essay. This article gave me specific examples of the country failing to keep a safe eye on its weapons, and allowed me to write about our downfalls as a government.

Stein, Sam. "Gun-Control Advocates Resigned To Few Changes In Wake Of Giffords Shooting."

The Huffington Post . TheHuffingtonPost.com, 01 Oct. 2011. Web. 20 Mar. 2012.

In this article the Huffington Post interviewed Carolyn McCarthy, and learned that the

Congress is trying to get certain bills passed related to gun control. She covers certain recent shootings around the United States and explains what bills need to be passed in order for change to occur.

The article was not biased; it only gave facts that needed to be known by the American public. This article opens my eyes and shows me that America may be going in the wrong direction to stop gun control.

This mainly appeals to Democrats who are seeking more restrictive gun control laws.

Yet another web article that supplied me with information of a specific example of how gun control may have prevented a tragedy, but also shows how gun control advocates reacted after the shooting of Giffords.

"The New England Journal of Medicine." Gun Ownership as a Risk Factor for Homicide in the

Home. a NEJM . N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Nov. 2012.

The study discussed in this article focused on homicides in three counties. Two had a large African American population and one was mainly white. The study showed that having a gun for self defense was more of a risk than not having one at all. The study showed that the majority of the deaths that happened in the home of the victim were murders committed by someone close to the victim. This study shows that gun violence occurrence in America is almost impossible to control. Domestic Violence, Alcohol and Drugs all play a role in homicides involving weapons.

This source represents the largest campaign for promoting the prevention of gun violence. I can gather plenty of information from this source on how to prevent gun violence. I learned how I can get myself, as well as others, involved in the community to spread the word on how important it is to learn and prevent more crimes from happening through the use of firearms.

This source explains why most regulations on guns are unreasonable. This is an opposing viewpoint which I like to research because that is how I figure out exactly what I need to fight and it makes my writing stronger.

Gun control basically involves disarming the community and thus there is going to be a reduction in the number of guns available by most of the population. This will lead to a reduction in the number of violent crimes such as murder and robbery with violence. The end result will be a major decrease in crime levels and accidental deaths due to misfiring of fire arms by common people. In most cases, gun control demands that all guns be registered at a central point. This means that the people who regulate the guns will be able to know the type of guns present in a specific area. This is very useful, particularly when it comes to the retrieval of certain types of

firearms such as assault rifles. However, there are numerous disadvantages associated with gun control. One of the major demerits is that gun control increases the confidence of a burglar.

Thieves will most likely attack your home knowing that you do not own a gun and therefore you cannot harm them.
