The Bible Jesus Used A Gospel-Centered Glance at the Old Testament Bethlehem Baptist Church, 2011–2012 Jason S. DeRouchie, Ph.D. The NT View of OT Jesus saw himself as the fulfillment of Old Testament hope. Matt. 5:17. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Luke 24:44. These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. John 5:46. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me.” Jesus’ mission was about the KINGDOM of God Luke 4:43. I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, for I was sent for this purpose. Acts 1:3. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. The nature of Jesus’ kingdom preaching focused on his work as Messiah and the global mission springing from it. Luke 24:46–47. Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Jesus emphasized that the same “gospel of the KINGDOM” he preached would be proclaimed to the whole world. Matt. 24:14. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Paul’s Old Testament preaching was about the KINGDOM of God climaxing in Jesus. Acts 20:24–25, 31. But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish the course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again…. Therefore, be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. Acts 28:23, 31. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets… proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance. Paul stressed how this KINGDOM message pointed both to the Messiah’s death and resurrection and to the fruit of global mission that would grow from it. Acts 26:22–23. I stand here testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would come to pass: that the Christ must suffer and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles.
