FAQS & BENEFITS OF ROLLER SKATING:
• Roller skating is ranked among the best aerobic exercises according to the American Heart Association and the
President’s Council of Physical Fitness.
• Roller skating is a workout that involves almost all the body’s muscles and in particular the heart.
• The National Institute for Fitness and Sports claims that roller skating works most of the major muscle groups –
glutes, quads (no pun intended), abdomen, calves and arms.
• The AHA proclaims that roller skating is equivalent to bicycling and jogging as a cardio workout.
• Roller skating causes 50% less impact on your joints than running. In other words, an aerobic skating workout has the
same benefit as the same amount of time spent jogging minus the joint damage.
• High caloric burn exercise.
• Mentally uplifting.
HOW WILL OUR PHAT SK8 PROGRAMME BENEFIT YOUR CHIKDREN?
They are put into situations where:
• They have to challenge themselves.
• They have to problem solve.
• They have to challenge their physical skills.
• They work alongside and with their peers in a new situation.
• They learn new ways to keep their bodies fit and healthy.
These benefits all link directly to the New Zealand school curriculum, below are some examples of where this programme will fit into your
daily and weekly plan:
• Managing self: “students who manage themselves are enterprising, resourceful, reliable and resilient”. “Students who are competent
problem solvers actively seek, use and create knowledge”.
• Participating and contributing: “Students who participate and contribute in group events have a sense of belonging and the confidence
to participate within
new contexts”.
• Health and physical education: “Students develop motor skills, knowledge
and understandings about movement, and positive attitudes towards
physical activity”.

TESTIMONIALS:
Ingrid has now run two very successful roller discos for us. She has a professional set up with great music,
lighting and equipment. The young people really enjoyed the music, games, activities and the atmosphere.
Some of the young people had never skated before and Ingrid was able to teach those ones as well as
extend the ones who could already skate.
Ingrid relates well to the young people and provided a positive, fun and interactive experience. Many of the
young people commented that the roller disco was “mean as”, “cool as” and “really fun with cool music and
activities”.

TESTIMONIALS:
In term 3, 2012, Team Kowhai had Phat Sk8 in for the afternoon as part of our PE programme. Approximately 50 pupils (2
classes) worked with Ingrid to develop their skills as skaters. We found that this type of activity ticked a number of our Rolly
Express learner boxes...
Engaged – All the pupils were totally focused on the task.
Experimental – They experimented with balance, body placement and by just ‘having a go’.
Persistent – This aspect was vital – “They kept going to get better...”.
Resourceful – They used a variety of ways and equipment to aid them as they skated.
Excellent – They strived for excellence and those who could skate were able to shine.
Self-managing – They solved problems for themselves by doing and by helping others.
Successful – Through trial and error and a lot of hard work, the pupils found success.
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to skate at school.
and enthusiasm.
Thank you Ingrid for your patience, guidance

TESTIMONIALS:
The Rolleston Community Centre offers a wide ranging selection of group fitness activities for the local community. One of
the most popular of these activities is the after-school roller skating session run by Ingrid Phelan through her business Phat
Sk8.
Ingrid is a superb instructor who makes every roller skating session an event for both the children and the adults who
participate. The music is loud, the games are fun and involve everyone, and we have been able to add the flashing lights
from our lighting rig to further enhance the atmosphere.
I’ve been really impressed with Ingrid’s organisation skills, her commitment to health and safety and her excellent
customer service.
The roller skating started with a dozen or so children each week, and now has grown to thirty or more participants every
week. The skates have not damaged the stadium floor (which was an initial concern) so in every respect, the programme
has been a great success.
I wish Ingrid all the best for the future and I have no hesitation in recommending her and Phat Sk8 to any organisation or
venue interested in promoting fun and healthy activities.

Thank you so much for the roller disco we had to fundraise for our class camp. The children all had a super
