COURSE INFORMATION
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will help you to identify groundcovers and evergreens
that are hardy to Nebraska. You will be able to place them properly in the landscape and know
some of the insects and diseases that are a problem with specific plants.
COURSE PREREQUISITES: HORT 1100 – Introduction to Horticulture
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will display cognitive
knowledge and comprehension of conifers, evergreens and groundcovers. Recognize plant
material by their common and botanical names. Apply the use of right plant, right place in the
landscape.

Manual of Woody Landscape Plants by Michael Dirr
SOFTWARE/FILE SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Metropolitan Community College uses Microsoft products as part of its standard software
and encourages students to do the same. You may save word-processed documents for
file attachments in Microsoft Word .doc or .docx format. If your software does not allow
either of these, then save files in Rich Text Format (.rtf).
CLASS STRUCTURE: Class lectures, discussion, audiovisuals, slides, guest speakers, mounts,
samples and student collections will be utilized to learn the material. We will walk around
campus when and if the weather permits.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WORK
TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS/ASSIGNMENTS: There will be a possible 800 points in the
class. Identification quizzes worth 200 points. Two tests worth 100 points each, one on
groundcovers and one on evergreens. Evergreen collection and identification sheets worth 200
points. A written and oral report for 100 points. Attendance and participation worth 100 points.
1. Assignments
Read all assigned materials and handouts, take notes on lectures and any videos or
speakers. Students will have a botanical collection consisting of leaves, stems and buds
for each evergreen on the list. A page identification sheet of each groundcover and
evergreen on the list will also be required at the end of the quarter.
2. Maintenance of Student Records
All quizzes, tests and reports will be returned to the student. The collection must be
turned in before the last week of class.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING PROGRAM:
Metropolitan Community College is committed to continuous improvement of teaching

may be asked to respond to surveys or questionnaires. In other cases, tests or assignments
you are required to do for this course may be shared with faculty and used for assessment
purposes.
USE OF STUDENT WORK:
By enrolling in classes offered by Metropolitan Community College, the student gives
the College license to mark on, modify, and retain the work as may be required by the
process of instruction, as described in the course syllabus. The institution shall not have
the right to use the work in any other manner without the written consent of the
student(s).
INSTRUCTOR’S EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS
ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY: Attendance is mandatory. If you miss a class
you are responsible for any make-up work that needs to be done. If a student is more than 10
minutes late or makes a habit of being late every class you will lose points. E-mail or call if you
are going to be late or miss class. After the first class meeting and through the Section
Census Date, the instructor may disenroll (WX) students who have not attended any
classes. The Section Census Date is listed under the Important Dates for the course in the
official Class Schedule at http://www.mccneb.edu/schedule/. There is no appeal for this
disenrollment. A student who fails to meet class attendance expectations may receive a
final grade mark of FX, indicating an absence-related failure, or a failing (F) grade.

STUDENT WITHDRAWAL:
If you cannot participate in and complete this course, you should officially withdraw by
calling Central Registration at 402-457-5231 or 1-800-228-9553. Failure to officially
withdraw will result in either an instructor withdrawal (IW) or failing (F) grade. The last
date to withdraw is noted in the CLASS IDENTIFICATION section of this syllabus.
LEARNING SUPPORT
