
Beja airport cleared for takeoff - First flight from Beja could depart in April or May
Located in the south of Portugal, just above the Algarve region the new Beja International Airport is preparing for an international
debut in spring 2011.
With a 3, 5 km long runway, large enough for big airplanes like the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340, Beja Airport unlocks the rural
Alentejo region. Beja, the nearby rural town, located on the Golden Plain, looks at a more than promising future. It’s expected the
airport will outgrow the southern Faro airport which has a much shorter runway. This makes Beja International Airport a good
candidate as the 3rd largest in Portugal, next to Porto and Lisbon.
Following reports last week of the first confirmed flight to Beja Airport, which should land in the Alentejo on 22 May from London
Heathrow courtesy of an independent UK tour operator Sunvil Discovery, it has since emerged that the first international flight from
Beja could actually take off from its runway as early as April, and would be to Cape Verde.
A flight from Beja to São Felipe, on the Cape Verdean island of Fogo has been penciled in for 14 April to consolidate the twinning of
the two cities, which occurred in 2009. The flight is due to stop at the Cape Verdean capital Praia before continuing on to the famous
island, and is scheduled to return on 21 April.
This was confirmed by the Mayor of Ferreira do Alentejo, Aníbal Costa, who said that the Beja – Ilha do Fogo flight “could be the first
international flight from Beja Airport.”
The trip is being organised by the municipalities of Ferreira do Alentejo and São Filipe, airport management company ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, TACV - Cabo Verde Airlines, Esdime – Agency for the Local development in the Southeast Alentejo, and
Dynmed Alentejo – Association for Studies and Projects for Regional Development.
“We are making all efforts for the flight to depart on 14 April and to return on 21”, the Mayor said, adding that the flights “already
have special authorisation” from the National Institute for Civil Aviation (INAC) and that they would take place “irrespective of Beja
Airport’s inauguration”.
Passengers will make the journey between Beja and Praia (on the island of Santiago) in a Boeing 757-200ER belonging to TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, and will then change to a regional airline to continue the journey on to São Filipe (Ilha do Fogo).

Grupo SATA national pioneer in the launch of mobile check-in and mobile boarding pass
Grupo SATA presents one more innovation in the check‐in process for SATA Internacional and SATA Air Açores f lights, simplifying
the passenger’s experience while reducing the environmental footprint and reducing operating costs.
The launch of Mobile Check‐In allows Grupo SATA to offer its customers an even more comfortable, quick and versatile way of
checking in via mobile phone, allowing passengers to check in from anywhere, as long as they have a mobile phone with Internet
access.
The introduction of the Mobile Boarding Pass, a service that allows passengers to receive a boarding pass on their mobile phone, in
addition to offering customers much more comfort, eliminating the need to print the boarding pass, reduces the environmental
footprint that comes with using thousands of boarding passes in paper format.
As such, SATA, in addition to being the first airline company to introduce these two services (Mobile Check‐In and Mobile Boarding
Pass) has joined the group of the most innovative airline companies in the world and those that contribute most to reducing the
environmental footprint of the commercial aviation industry.
The Mobile Boarding Pass is available for Internet Check‐In (Online Check‐In) or for Check‐In via mobile phone (Mobile Check‐In).
Mobile Check‐In and the Mobile Boarding Pass are available to passengers, with or without baggage, on all SATA Internacional and
SATA Air Açores flights from airports in the Azores, Madeira, Lisbon and Porto, except for flights to the United States, Canada and
the United Kingdom, due to specific security procedures for these countries.
Mobile Check‐In, which may be done 72 to 1¼ hours prior to the flight’s departure, has the major advantage of allowing passengers
to check in remotely, i.e. without having to wait in the check‐in line, together with the option of choosing seats in advance.
Due to the existence of multiple fares at SATA Internacional requiring the checking of legal documents to benefit from them,
passengers starting their trip with resident fares, passengers with student fares and passengers requesting special services cannot
benefit from the Mobile
Boarding Pass service and must pick up their boarding pass at airport counters specifically designated for this purpose.

SECTION 6 - EASTER IN PORTUGAL
Easter in Portugal
Experience Easter in Portugal, celebrating spring with family and friends.
Come to Braga at Easter and enjoy the festive atmosphere during the Semana Santa (Holy Week). Attend
the Ecce Homo Procession on Good Friday, led by the Farricocos (barefoot men in tunics with hoods), one
of the most peculiar parts of the Portuguese religious tradition.
If you’re in the Castelo de Vide region in the south, you’ll experience a very different Easter celebration,
one with Jewish origins. In the morning of Easter Eve, the region’s shepherds invade the town centre to
have their flocks of sheep blessed. At night, during the Vigília Pascal (Paschal Vigil), people ask for
forgiveness in secret, reminiscent of the Jewish Yom Kippur. At the end of the mass, all those present
bring cowbells that ring the Cortejo da Aleluia (Procession of Alleluia) through the town.
Easter is the perfect time to try specialities of Portuguese cuisine. After the fasting of Lent, the best delicacies are eaten, such as
roast kid, lamb stew, meatballs, buns, chocolate and almond eggs. Just a few of the delicious dishes you can try.

SECTION 10 – ERICERIA PORTUGAL AWARDED SURFING RESERVE STATUS
World Surfing Reserves today announced that two nominated surf zones –
Santa Cruz in Northern California and Ericeira in Portugal – have been formally
approved and will be dedicated as World Surfing Reserves (WSRs).
The two iconic surf regions will join Malibu, California, which was dedicated as
the first World Surfing Reserve in October 2010, and Manly Beach, Australia,
which was approved in 2010 and is awaiting dedication sometime in 2011, as
the first sites to receive the prestigious WSR designation.
The Ericeira area of Portugal is a surf mecca for Portuguese and international
surfers alike. The approved Ericeira surf zone consists of 4 km (2.5 miles) of
coastline that contains a highly concentrated group of quality surf breaks,
several of them world-class, including the popular Ribeira d’Ilhas and other
world-renowned breaks.
Ribeira d’Ilhas
“Ericeira is such a diverse surfing coastline, it has something for everyone,”
said WCT professional surfer Tiago Pires, who grew up surfing there. “There
are big waves, small waves, expert waves, and beginner waves. I love this
area, and I’m glad to see it get the recognition it deserves, as well as a tool to
help better protect it.”
World Surfing Reserves seeks to designate and protect the most important and
cherished surf areas around the world, in partnership with local surf
communities. WSR sites are nominated and selected based on four major
criteria: quality and consistency of waves, importance to surf culture and
history, environmental characteristics, and community support. So far over a
hundred sites have been submitted for consideration for WSR status from 34
different countries.
Ten-time World Surfing Champion Kelly Slater, who lent his support to the
World Surfing Reserves movement last year, also expressed his strong
backing for Santa Cruz and Ericeira. “Any time we have a chance to officially preserve a beach or specific surf break, I’m all for it,”
he said. “World Surfing Reserves is setting the bar high and far-reaching by covering the globe with the next group of beaches to be
protected. I look forward to the dedications and future protection those beaches – as well as many others – will see.”
Beyond its cultural and aesthetic significance, each WSR is a meeting of land and sea selected for the unique and salutary nature of
its waves and natural setting. The dedication of each WSR seeks the protection of this coastal zone of waves and habitat from
inappropriate development, through international and local partnership that builds community around conservation, to improve and
dictate stewardship of the area.
About World Surfing Reserves: World Surfing Reserves (WSR) proactively identifies, designates, and preserves outstanding waves,
surf zones and their surrounding environments, around the world. WSR is an initiative launched by Save The Waves Coalition in
2009 in conjunction with National Surfing Reserves – Australia, and through additional partnerships with the International Surfing
Association (ISA) and Stanford University’s Center for Responsible Travel (CREST).

SECTION 12 – ITINERARY SUGGESTION: HORSES BY THE BANKS OF THE
RIVER TAGUS
Horses by the banks of the River Tagus
Are your children fond of horses?
Then take a trip through the meadowland region of the Ribatejo and show them the famous Lusitano
breed of horse, bulls and “campinos” (the typical Ribatejo herdsmen), as well as a very special
castle.
In Benavente, visit the “Companhia das Lezírias”, the country’s largest farm. See some beautiful
examples of the Lusitano breed of horse and let your children play at the special Educational Farm,
where they will be able to learn more about animals and even how to make bread! For those of you
who are more energetic, there is also the possibility of enjoying some extreme sports.
In Santarém, let your eyes rest awhile as you enjoy the view from Portas do Sol over the neverending meadows down below, and then move on to the Torre das Cabaças to visit the Clock
Museum. There, your whole family will be able to find out more about the history of our
measurement of time over the centuries. When the time comes to leave, and if your stomach is rumbling and telling you it’s time to
eat, then pass through Almeirim and taste the famous “sopa da pedra” (“stone soup”), made with everything that can fit into your
stomach and into the saucepan. End this full day at a beautiful museum house: the Casa-Museu dos Patudos, in Alpiarça.
On the second day, stop at Golegã, a town with a longstanding equestrian tradition, which holds its famous Horse Fair every
November. Make sure to visit the town’s Igreja Matriz (Parish Church), with its beautiful Manueline doorway and then take your
family on to the Paul do Boquilobo Nature Reserve, an internationally important wetland, highly favoured by the migratory birds that
you can see here.
After all these horses and “campinos”, take your children on to see one of the most unusual castles in Portugal. Standing on an
island in the middle of the River Tagus, Almourol Castle is the home of many legends and myths associated with the adventures of
the Knights Templar that will certainly stir the imagination of the younger members of your family. Round off the day in Tomar,
visiting another Templar Castle and the Convento de Cristo – the monastery that was the headquarters of these religious knights
and monks.
Points of interest along the Itinerary:
-Núcleo Museológico do Tempo - Torre das Cabaças
-Portas do Sol
-Casa-Museu dos Patudos
-Igreja Matriz ou de Nossa Senhora da Conceição
-Golegã
-Convento de Cristo e Castelo Templário

SECTION 15– MONSERRATE HAS A NEW ROSE GARDEN, THE MOST
IMPORTANT AND DISTINCTIVE IN PORTUGAL
Monserrate has a new Rose Garden, the most important and distinctive in Portugal
Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall strengthen
the ties of friendship between Portugal and the United Kingdom with the inauguration in
Sintra of the most important and distinctive Rose Garden in Portugal, at the garden of
Monserrate, a place with a long history of the presence and legacy of the British
Community in Portugal.
With this inauguration, nature conservation and historic preservation is reinforced by a
new destination for tourism within the World Heritage Cultural Landscape of Sintra, and
in particular at Monserrate. This follows on from dozens of restoration projects realised
over the past few years at various historic properties and gardens, together with works to
provide supporting infrastructure.
The new Rose garden covers an area of six thousand square metres, containing 800 rose
bushes of approximately 200 varieties (some of which are very rare). The roses are planted
in an amphitheatre-like valley near the Garden of Mexico, below the recently re-opened and
renovated Palace of Monserrate.
The works to reinstall the Rose Garden at Monserrate, which began early in 2011, included
the reconstruction of more than a thousand metres of paths built in granite cobbles. The
new collection of rose bushes was donated by the “Friends of Monserrate”.
These works were the responsibility of Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua – PSML (an entity
that manages four historic palaces and their parks within the World Heritage Cultural
Landscape of Sintra). They were coordinated by the landscape architect Gerald Luckhurst;
who has for more than twenty years been linked to the restoration and maintenance of the
gardens of the PSML. Shortly a new garden restoration project will begin: the Tree Fern
Valley, also at Monserrate.
On the second day of their official visit to Portugal Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of
Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall (29th of March 2011) planted two rose bushes, one a
Portuguese variety ‘Bella Portuguesa’ and one a British variety: thus representing
symbolically the historic ties of alliance between the two nations. The British rose variety is
named ‘Duchess of Cornwall’ and was planted by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of
Cornwall in the presence of representatives of the British community in Portugal.

Monserrate, the British in Portugal
Since the beginning of the nineteenth century Monserrate and Sintra have been obligatory destinations for the British Tourists
making their Grand Tour of Southern Europe and the Middle East.
The palace and gardens of Monserrate were built in the late eighteenth-century by the British merchant Gerard De Visme and rebuilt
in the nineteenth-century by their new owner, a British baronet, Sir Francis Cook. It was at this time that the original Rose Garden
was planted.
In the second half of the twentieth century the gardens were almost lost and the voluntary work by the Friends of Monserrate was of
crucial importance in their recovery. The house and gardens were classified along with the Cultural Landscape of Sintra as World
Heritage by UNESCO.
19
The works to restore and valorise the Palace of Monserrate were recently awarded the Prémio
Turismo de Portugal 2010 [Portugal Tourism Prize 2010] for the best re-qualification project of a
public property. Though they had fallen into ruin the principle rooms of the house were restored and
prepared for diverse future uses: events, conferences, and concerts. These re-qualification works,
subsidised with EEA Grants funds, were carried out in a way that visitors to the property were able to accompany restoration “stepby-step”.
The Cultural Landscape of Sintra is internationally recognised and one of the principal destinations for Cultural Tourism in Portugal,
a strategic product for national tourism. In 2010 the four parks managed by PSML received 968 thousand visitors, 80.5% of which
were foreign nationals.
About Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua
Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua (PSML) is a exclusively public capital enterprise established in 2000, which manages, restores
and maintains the following natural and cultural heritage of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra (proclaimed by UNESCO as World
Heritage): Park and Palace of Pena, the Moorish Castle, Palace and Gardens of Monserrate and the Cork Convent.
The principle objective of the PSML is to attract more visitors and to provide them with improved welcoming conditions, cultural
activities, and education. Stakeholders are the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e da Biodiversidade [Nature Conservation and
Biodiversity Institute], the Instituto dos Museus e da Conservação [Museums and Conservation Institute], Turismo de Portugal
[Portuguese Tourism] and the Câmara Municipal de Sintra [Municipality of Sintra].

SECTION 16– SOUTO MOURA WON THE PRITZKER PRIZE 2011
The architect Eduardo Souto Moura won the Pritzker prize 2011, what is come to be known throughout the world as architecture’s
highest honor.
This is the second time on the history of the prize that a Portuguese architect has been chosen . The first was in 1992 when it was
granted to Alvaro Siza, with whom Souto Moura worked for five years as a student.
According to the Pritzker Prize’s jury, Souto Moura has produced a body of work that is of our time but also carries echoes of
architectural traditions. His buildings have a unique ability to convey seemingly conflicting characteristics — power and modesty,
bravado and subtlety, bold public authority and a sense of intimacy —at the same time.” Since forming his own office in 1980, Souto
Moura has completed well over sixty projects, most in his native Portugal, but he has designs in Spain, Italy, Germany, United
Kingdom and Switzerland.
Among his works the jury distinguished Braga Football stadium and calls this work, “...muscular, monumental and very much at
home within its powerful landscape.” In the city where he lives and works, Porto, we find other projects, like the Burgo Tower,
described by the jury as “...two buildings side by side, one vertical and one horizontal with different scales, in dialogue with each
other and the urban landscape” and Casa das Artes, a Cultural Center which the jury describes as “a testament to his ability to
combine materials expressively.” He used copper, stone, concrete and wood.
A convent and monastery in a mountainous terrain near Amares, called Santa Maria do Bouro originally built in the 12th century,
was converted into a state inn in conformity with the project by Souto Moura. The jury declares in their citation that he “has created
spaces that are both consistent with their history and modern in conception.”
One of his most recent projects is “Casa das Histórias Paula Rego” at Cascais, a museum that house a collection of paintings by
Paula Rego. In the middle of a fenced off forest, this building is formed by a set of volumes of varying heights, where two large
pyramids along the entrance axis prevent the project from being a neutral sum of boxes.

Martins and Julião Sarmento.
The remarkable set of photographs “The fifty faces of Juliet” by Man Ray from the Fondazione Marconi
collection, Milan is on show. They are portraits of Juliet Browner, the artist’s wife, photographed between 1941
and 1955. Man Ray’s photography is outstanding due to the discovery of new photographic processes and to his
subversion of traditional techniques. Besides painting, Man Ray always kept up his activity as a photographer
(mundane records, fashion photography, models, etc.).
Two Portuguese artists emerge in dialogue with Man Ray, Jorge Martins and Julião Sarmento. This dialogue brings to the public
little known or totally unknown photographs by two important contemporary artists who, like Man Ray, have always photographed in
parallel with other artistic practices. They are also portraits of women which surprise and elucidate creative indagations.
