AND ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

EXTENDED CERTIFICATE / DIPLOMA IN SPORT
COURSE AIMS AND INTRODUCTION
The BTEC First in Sport courses will give students the opportunity to achieve a nationally
recognised vocational qualification with a focus on sport and the leisure industry
The Extended Certificate course will be taught through 180 guided learning hours and the
Diploma course will be taught through 360 guided learning hours – successful completion
of course can be used to progress on to more advanced qualifications such as BTEC level
3
Students will have opportunities to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities
and attitudes essential for the world of work

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
• Students must have a proven interest in physical education and sport and a commitment
to develop sports leadership and organisational skills
• It is not necessary to be a high performer in individual sports as the course is appropriate
for all abilities
• Qualities such as Leadership, Self discipline, commitment, responsibility, organisation
team work and high standards will be expected and developed throughout the course

EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC EXTENDED CERTIFICATE IN SPORT
Course Content:
Students will study 5 Units of study to gain 30 credits
Unit 1 : FITNESS TESTING AND TRAINING: -
• This unit explores the basic requirements needed to be able to perform at the highest

level such as what is fitness and how we test it
How lifestyle affects performance
How psychological factors affect performance

Unit 2 : PRACTICAL SPORT
• This unit focuses on developing and improving the students own practical sports

performance. Students will study up to 6 different sports in blocks of approximately
eight weeks with a focus on:
Rules, regulations, scoring systems
Demonstrating ranges of skills, techniques/tactics
Understanding roles and responsibilities of officials, coaching referees, scorers,
timekeepers etc.
Develop ability to analyse own/others’ performance as well as suggesting how to
improve.
Assignments have to completed for both an individual Sport and a Team Sport

Unit 4 : ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY FOR SPORT
This unit explores basic anatomy and physiology including:
• The skeletal system
• The muscular system
• The cardio-respiratory system and how they affect performance

Unit 11 : DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONAL FITNESS
This unit enables learners to plan, do and evaluate a personal fitness programme and
includes
• Identifying areas of fitness you need to improve
• Planning a fitness programme
• Implementing the programme
• Evaluating the programme

Unit 18 : EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON THE BODY SYSTEMS :
This unit is designed to enable learners to explore the effects of exercise on the human
body by participating in a range of practical experiments and activities
• The effects of exercise on the body systems
• How the energy systems work

EDEXCEL LEVEL 2 BTEC DIPLOMA IN SPORT
Students who have studied the areas of study covered by in the extended certificate course will
have the opportunity of continuing their BTEC Studies to DIPLOMA LEVEL by studying a further 3
units to meet Course requirements of 60 credits

Unit 1 : Fitness Testing and Training
Unit 2 : Practical Sport
Unit 4 : Anatomy and Physiology
Unit 11 : Development of Personal Fitness
Unit 18 : Effects of Exercise on the Body
PLUS
Unit 2: Health, Safety and Injury in Sport
• This unit focuses on developing an understanding of Health and Safety issues including :
• Risk Assessment and how to ensure all activities are safe
• Demonstrating an understanding of Sports Injuries and causes
• Demonstrating the knowledge and ability to treat a variety of injuries

Unit 5 : Planning and Leading Sports Activities
• This Unit focuses on developing the ability to plan, lead and review your sports activities
and also un derstand how to plan, organise and run sports events

Unit14: Instructing Exercise and Fitness
• This Unit focuses on developing the ability to plan, lead and review fitness sessions for
different clients needs

ASSIGNMENTS
• Each unit has a VOCATIONAL SCENARIO which the assignment tasks
are focused on
• Assignments have been broken down into a series of tasks which give students the
opportunity to be assessed as a Pass, Merit or Distinction –
• Failure to meet standards will be assessed as a Referral and returned to student with
appropriate feedback designed to meet standards
There is no final exam - all work will be completed through the course
and be assessed by your teacher to ensure it meets required
standards
The course is student centred – you will learn through your own investigation and
research – the teacher is a learning resource, offering advice and guidance as to how
to approach your work
The vocational nature of the course allows assessment to be met in a variety of ways
including
• Keeping a diary / Booklet
• Producing posters, Power Points / leaflets
• Producing written news reports and / or Video presentations
• Leading a class presentation / talk
• Videoed interviews
Not all assessment requires written work, some assessment tasks can also be made
through discussion and teacher student feedback – this type of assessment will
require supporting documentation such as witness statements

ASSESSMENT
• Assignments will be given at the beginning of each new unit with set deadlines
• A record of progress will be kept by staff on all students’ work detailing all task
assignments in terms of Referral, Pass, Merit and Distinction –
• Failure to meet attainment level will result in feedback to student through
interim feedback forms and opportunity to resubmit the work
• This work will be marked by your class teacher and then internally verified by
our staff and an external Exam board Verifier will then moderate the work to
ensure your work meets national standard requirements
• Successful completion of the certificate course is the equivalent of gaining 2 C
grades at GCSE
• Successful completion of the Diploma course is the equivalent of gaining 4 C
grades at GCSE

EXPECTATIONS
There are theory and practical components of the course and Students are
expected to take responsibility for their own learning and complete tasks both
at home and at school
They are also expected to bring kit for the practical components as this is a
compulsory part of the course and participation is integral to passing the course
GRADING
The level of attainment will be marked individually for each unit of the course
in line with BTEC expectations – the grades are
• Distinction (18 points)
• Merit (12 points)
• Pass (6 points)
An overall grade is awarded based on the performance in each unit
• 18 -29 points (overall PASS (2 GCSE`S at C grade)
• 30 – 41 points (overall MERIT 2 GCSE at B Grade)
• 42 – 53 points overall DISTICTION 2 GCSEs at A grade
• 54 points DISTINCTION * (2 GCSE`s at A * grade)
If you do not achieve a Pass grade your work will be graded as a Referral
and must be resubmitted after the unsatisfactory / incomplete work
has been redone
(You will receive teacher feedback as to exactly what is needed)

DEADLINES - SUBMISSION OF WORK
Each assignment will have a submission date – you will be given a minimum of 4
weeks to plan research and present your assignment
• If you have a genuine reason why you cannot submit your work by the deadline
you will need a written parental explanation outlining why the deadline could not
be met - Depending on reasons an extension might be extended
• Students will need to be organised to ensure meeting deadlines
• All non written tasks i.e. class presentation, question and answer sessions,
practical Attainment in some areas i.e. coaching etc need to have fully
completed observation and / or Witness sheets completed by the teacher to
provide appropriate evidence that the units requirements have been met

PLAGIARISM
In the event of you copying work word for word from books etc and/ or
submitting the work of another student the following procedure will take place
• You will be required to sign a front page to your assignments stating that this is
your own work
• You will be given a written warning as to ensuring you produce your own work
and your assignment will be classified as a referral and have to be resubmitted
by a given deadline
•
If there are further examples of copying others work – you will be withdrawn
from the course

in Sport is a Double award Equivalent
to 2 GCSE`s at C grade or Above
The BTEC FIRST DIPLOMA in Sport is a Equivalent to 4 GCSE`s
at C grade or Above

• If some units are not completed or do not meet standards you will not
pass the course

THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS
Each unit has an Assignment broken down into separate tasks that students
have to answer – each task asks a question directly related to the grading
criteria – indicated by letters such as P1, M4, D3
To gain a pass you have to achieve passes in all components of the course –
similarly to achieve a merit you have to achieve a pass and a merit in all
sections of the course

The teacher will be keeping a record of all assessments through
• TRACKING RECORD SHEET which will ensure that all the assessment
processes, inc interim feedback, Final assessment, Internal / external
verification have been met
• CRITERIA RECORD SHEET which will record attainment in each
assignment
• FINAL OVERAL RECORD – indicating what levels you have achieved in all
assignments of the course - The student will check through this at the end
of the course and will sign to accept the level of grade indicated – if areas
of work are missing opportunities to catch up will be given in designated
catch up time

RECORDING ASSESSMENT
1. Front copy of unit : All assignment task will be submitted with a standard Front
page indicating dates of deadlines so you know when you have to finish your work –
2. Interim feedback sheet – The front page will incorporate your interim
feedback sheet 2 weeks before the final submission deadline before – this will tell you
if your work is satisfactory or whether you have to do some more work – You will be
advised as to what you need to do to pass and you will be given more time to complete
the work
3. Observation Sheet and Witness Sheets: Some tasks can only be
assessed by the teacher observing you i.e. Practical work and do not require written
evidence – in these cases the teacher must fill in an observation / witness form
indicating how you meet the grading criteria
4. Final Assessment Sheets: These will give students a final grading indicating
what level of attainment they have
Throughout this process there are 2 way interactions between
student and teacher
• Internal verification Sheet: Your completed and marked work will be
internally checked by another teacher to ensure that you have achieved the correct
level
• External Verification: To ensure that the grades given are correct – work is
sent off to an external verifier who will check the work and ensure that the school is
marking the work properly and ensuring you get the grade you deserve
• Appeals Process: If you are not happy with the grade you have been given there
is an appeals process that you can go through – Discuss with your teacher if you feel

BRISTOL METROPOLITAN ACADEMY
BTEC BADMINTON TOURNAMENT
As part of the BTEC SPORT course students had to take on the role of newspaper
reporter for a local paper and report on our Badminton Tournament
Students were seeded and the competition held on Thursday 17 th September 2009
BRISTOL METROPOLITAN ACADEMY --- BADMINTON CHAMPION
Aarron Betteridge, pre tournament favourite and the number 1 seed held on through some very
close matches to become our new Badminton Champion - Aaron displaying the athleticism he
showed last year in winning the Yr 10 Athletics pentathlon competition beat surprise finalist Abdi
Gure ( no 13 seed ) in a very competitive final 11-15, 15-11, 15,13
RUNNER UP ABDI GURE
Abdi had a fantastic tournament coming from 13 th seed to reach the final
beating Aidrous Ali in the semi final

BTEC BADMINTON TOURNAMENT
PLATE CHAMPION -- ZAKARIA SHIDE
• All competitors knocked out before the semi finals were reseeded and entered into the
plate competition

Zakarai Shide playing with great determination came through from 5 th seed to beat No 1
seed Adam Silverthorne in the final

Blue’s Celebrate An 8-6 Victory
Strengths
Weaknesses
Red Team
Red’s strengths was communication up front was their
strengths and high skill level upfront and in the midfield.
Their weaknesses was they kept drifting offside and the
keeper stayed on his line.
Blue Team
Blues passing was very good and accurate and had a
lot of pace all around, and they could finish when given
a chance.
However their weaknesses are their centre-backs who
kept kicking the ball long and not passing enough.
