We ask that you follow the following guidelines: Feel free to contact partners for more information. However, please follow through when you contact a partner. MTHC Externship While support for people in the LGBTQ community is growing, gender nonconforming individuals still face significant barriers to accessing health care, as well as health disparities on top of the everyday prejudice, violence, and discrimination they may experience in the community. Since trans-allied providers are needed in all specialties and all communities, our hope is that this exposure to the gender non-conforming community will help students to become more culturally competent. This is not an official university program, so there is a lot of flexibility. Typically the externship includes: Minnesota Trans Health and Wellness Conference Workshop on the basics of transgender health care with Reclaim, a center for gender non-conforming youth Workshop on dismantling transphobia with Alex Iantaffi of the Center for Sexual Health Informal meeting with a transgender patient Shadowing several trans-friendly physicians In total, the externship will be approximately 20-24 hours over the course of the next year and is extremely flexible and self-scheduled.
