GRADUATE STUDENT TEACHING EXPERIENCE PROGRAM
The Department seeks to extend opportunities for autonomous teaching to graduate
students in order to provide graduate students with teaching experience, aid graduate
students in the preparation of a teaching portfolio, and to enrich undergraduate course
offerings.
Students entering their fourth and fifth years in the Ph.D. program are strongly
encouraged to apply for these positions. The Director of Undergraduate Studies will
select awardees in consultation with the Department Head, Director of Graduate Studies,
and the graduate student’s advisor.
Awardees are expected to teach one course per semester during an academic year with an
option of teaching over the summer as needed.
Selection is based upon a student’s year in the program, successful progression through the
Ph.D. program, a faculty-member reference, a written description of prospective course
offerings, the match between the Department’s expected teaching needs and students’
fields of interest, and past TA or teaching performance (as applicable). In the case of firsttime applicants, preference will be given to students entering their fourth year. An awardee
may be asked to teach courses different from those described in the application essay,
depending on Departmental needs.
The opportunity to teach two courses in the subsequent year will be extended to first-year
awardees contingent on (1) continued successful progression through the Ph.D. program,
(2) adequate performance and promise as a teacher, (3) satisfaction of the Department’s
Expectations for Graduate-Student Instructors, and (4) Departmental needs.
For full consideration, apply by 5:00 p.m. February 9, 2015 for positions
available in the 2015-2016 Academic Year.

PART 5: ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF EXPECTATIONS
Please carefully review the Department’s expectations of Graduate-student instructors:
 Courses will conform to requirements of the Department, College, and Campus.
 Graduate-student instructors will provide initial draft course material (draft
syllabus, textbook selection, and/or course pack list) to the Director of
Undergraduate Studies for review no later than one month prior to the first class.
 Graduate-student instructors will cooperatively communicate and meet with the
Director of Undergraduate Studies and other faculty and staff to ensure that course
material is satisfactory and complete prior to the first class meeting.
 Graduate-student instructors will promptly communicate any concerns about their
course to and seek appropriate assistance under the guidance of the Director of
Undergraduate Studies.
 Graduate-student instructors will conduct a mid-course evaluation and provide the
results to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
 Graduate-student instructors will solicit ICES evaluations and release the results to
the Department Head, Martin Perry.
 Graduate-student instructors will attend training programs at the request of the
Department.
 Graduate-student instructors will meet prior to and throughout the teaching
semester(s) with the Director of Undergraduate studies and their fellow instructors
and other faculty or staff, as appropriate.
 Graduate-student instructors who meet Departmental expectations and show
adequate or improving classroom performance will have priority for renewal in the
next year, all else equal.
