Syllabus Español 1120 ONLINE Fall/Otoño 2015 M.H. López Morgan Office: E-008 E-mail:lopezm@nwfsc.edu Class: COURSE DESCRIPTION: Spanish 1120 online is the first of a three semester sequence of courses. The course emphasizes oral communication, grammatical skills, and listening comprehension. Throughout the course of the semester students will be expected to read short texts, write short compositions and communicate orally at an elementary level in Spanish. Students will also be expected to complete and submit written and oral tests. It is highly recommended that students taking this section have some prior knowledge of Spanish, either by having been exposed to the language informally, or by having attended Spanish classes at a primary or secondary school level. As with all online instruction, it is important that students be highly motivated self-learners. This class is 100% online. Students taking this class should be comfortable using technology independently. In addition, because this is a short semester class, it is also important for the student to have good time management skills. Introduction and instructions for the planned components and assignments of the class will be posted in a separate document. TEXTS: Potowski et al. Dicho y Hecho, 10th Edition: It is recommended that students purchase a good Spanish-English dictionary or have the ability to use an online dual language dictionary. WEBSITES: Students will be required to turn in assignments from the following websites: www.wileyplus.com /~http://www.colby.edu/~bknelson/SLC/index.php https://d2l.nwfsc.edu/ This class will also use open source web materials to enrich students’ language experience. The instructor will take careful precautions to safeguard students on the Internet; however, students should be aware of the risks that can exist with the use of the Internet. OBJECTIVES: In this course the student will become proficient in the basic communication skills of the Spanish language. (S)he will be able to read, write, and speak Spanish at an elementary proficiency level. The student will also learn about the culture and daily lives of the Spanish speaking peoples in the United States and around the world, which will include the many contributions that have been made by the Spanish speaking community to the world’s literature, art, music, and other areas. GRADE OF “INCOMPLETE”: At the discretion of the instructor, an incomplete grade (“I”) may be awarded when the student is unable to finish the required work because of unforeseen extenuating circumstances such as illness or TDY assignment. Please note that the inability to keep up with the pace of the class is not an extenuating circumstance. To receive an “I” grade, the student must have successfully completed 75% of the required coursework and be able to finish the remaining work without attending class. An “I” grade will automatically convert to a grade of “F” if the student does not complete the remainder of the coursework by the established deadline. STUDENT RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILTIES AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Academic dishonesty in any form is a serious offense that will have equally serious consequences that range from failing the class to formal disciplinary action. Please refer online to the College Catalog and Student Handbook. Academic Integrity is especially important in this class because if you are not doing your own work, your knowledge will be compromised to the extent that you will not be able to use the different language structures and vocabulary expected in the oral exams. This will result in a failing grade for this component. STUDENT RESPONSIBILTY: Students are responsible for submitting their assignments on time. Assignments can be submitted via email, D2L and on the Wiley plus website. Oral exams will be submitted by video using Wiley‘s component of Blackboard Collaborate. EVALUATION: The final grade will be computed based on the following percentages: 15% Compositions 25% Quizzes 15% Oral Presentations Grading Scale: 90-100 -A 80-89- B 10% Participation/Homework 15% Exam I 20% Exam II 70-79 -C 60-69- D Tutoring and other learning resources for SPN I-IV are available in the Academic Success Center at the Niceville Campus, Bldg.
