Coordinator for Outdoor Recreation Program
Job Description
Overview:
This position is responsible for assisting the Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation and one
Graduate Assistant with the organization, promotion, supervision, and evaluation of the
comprehensive Outdoor Recreation program. This position’s primary responsibility is managing,
maintaining, and promoting the UGA Challenge Course, which consists of a combination of
indoor/outdoor and low/high teambuilding elements.
In addition, this position is responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, scheduling and evaluation
of a large student staff working within the program. This position also acts as a department liaison with
university units and community groups.
Responsibilities:
Program and Policy Management (50%):
Provide administrative support and oversight for a comprehensive challenge course program.
Collaborate with other UGA departments across campus and off-campus community groups. Actively
seek out new partnerships with other departments, local businesses, and non-profit organizations to
generate revenue. Assist in a Challenge Course academic class co-sponsored by the Outdoor
Recreation program and the Department of Kinesiology for physical education credits. Facilitate groups
on high and low course elements as needed. Develop, implement, and continually evaluate policies
and procedures to guide program operation and address risk management concerns, including
Emergency Action Plans. Evaluate and maintain facility grounds, challenge course elements, and
equipment. Support the other components of the UGA Outdoor Recreation program (adventure trips,
outdoor rental center, and climbing wall) as necessary.
Personnel Management (30%):
Hire, train and schedule staff to facilitate experiential learning programs as part of the UGA Challenge
Course. Conduct an ongoing staff training program including staff meetings and staff evaluations. Staff
facility training should include emergency action planning (EAP), incident response, customer care, and
other facility concerns. Actively incorporate Departmental Vision, Mission, and Values into staff
training and development.
Strategic Management, Assessment, and Planning (10%):
Working with the Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation, use best practices in assessment and
evaluation to strategically position the Challenge Course and outdoor recreation facilities for long-term
success. Purposefully plan programs to incorporate Divisional priorities as they relate to the Student
Affairs strategic plan and student learning priorities (Pillars of Student Success).
Fiscal Management (10%):
Monitor the program budget, manage ongoing payroll and prepare revenue projections. Work
cooperatively with the business services staff to ensure that all operations are compliant with fiscal
policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Recreational Sports or Assistant Director for Outdoor
Recreation.
Educational Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
 Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management, or related field from an accredited
college or university;
 Two years of relevant work experience in a recreation setting (graduate assistantship
experience may be considered)
Preferred Qualifications:
 Master’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Higher Education, or related field from an
accredited college or university;
 Challenge course facilitation experience;
 ACCT membership and/or AORE membership;
 Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder
Individual must hold or be eligible for a valid Georgia Driver’s License
Other Qualifications:
 Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
 Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
 Excellent computer skills including knowledge of email, calendar, internet research, Microsoft
Office Suite
 Ability to interact with patrons using strong verbal, written and listening skills
 Ability to work a flexible schedule
