Activity Coordinator

About Common Ground Outdoor Adventures:

Common Ground Outdoor Adventures (CGOA) is one of the largest therapeutic recreation organizations in Utah. Each year, Common Ground serves more than 2,500 youths and adults with disabilities in Northern Utah, and around the

United States. CGOA provides programming in a variety of outdoor recreation including biking, camping, river rafting, skiing, water sports, and various other activities to individuals with cognitive, physical or emotional disabilities. Year round programming is headquartered in Logan, Utah.

Position Overview:

The Activity Coordinator oversees the ground breaking Youth Adventure Leadership Program (YALP), implementing curriculum, coordinating programming, managing interns and conducting programming for daily and multi-day camps and training. The coordinator will teach youth or coordinate collaborations in the following areas: outdoor skills, certifications and training such as Wilderness First Aid, Leave no Trace Ethics, Food Handlers Permit, etc. Activity Coordinator will also schedule site visits and short-courses with local land management agencies, researchers, educators, and retailers introducing youth to the educational, vocational, and outdoor recreational opportunities in their own community. In addition to instruction in outdoor cooking, swift water rescue techniques, etc the group will learn firsthand about local research projects that are being done by Utah State University professors on field trips. Topics include fish ecology, geomorphology, and water quality.

Responsibilities:

Oversees YALP programming

Coordinates with business and business leaders in outdoor recreation around North Utah to ensure site visits, internships, and learning opportunities

Implements engaging recruitment strategies at schools, agencies, and public in order to increase interest and recruit participants for YALP program

Maintains participant records, group accounting, and reports statistics for specific groups.

Coordinates certification classes for YALP participants including, but not limited to, Wilderness First Aid, Leave no

Trace Ethics, Food Handlers Permits, Swift Water Rescue

Coordinate multi-day camping trip for participants of YALP, helping youth plan and lead all aspects of the trip including preparation, activities, and implementation

Recruit, hire, and manage interns and volunteers for YALP program

Sets goals and plans activities/lessons according to therapeutic recreation concepts

Coordinate and staff Common Ground year round programming

Schedule activities with agencies, schools, and public to recruit participants for Common Ground programming

Assists with Common Ground special events.

Actively participates with Common Ground fundraising efforts.

Drives organization vehicles, including 12 passenger vans and 14 passenger busses

Obtain CDL medical license, and follow all UDOT procedures with operating a vehicle

Possesses and maintains a friendly, congenial, and helpful attitude while effectively dealing with guests and

 other employees.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

High school diploma or GED

Athletically oriented with experience in outdoor leadership/ recreation activities.

Two years experience with people with disabilities and/or disability issues.

Ability to relate well to diverse populations.

Ability to work and make decisions independently.

Highly motivated.

Skilled in office management, computers with demonstrated ability to successfully multi-task

Valid driver's license and excellent driving record.

Must pass background check

Can work efficiently under pressure and help motivate employees to meet demands

Excellent communication and organization skills

Strong ability to problem solve in a fast paced environment

Demonstrated history of responsibility, dependability, and maturity

Ability to be flexible, creative, and adaptable to situations

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor Degree in adaptive or therapeutic recreation, recreation management or a closely related field preferred

Current Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)

Past employment or internship with therapeutic recreation organization

Certified in Wilderness First Responder, Swiftwater Rescue, Food Handlers

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to assist participants with adaptive ski, bike, and water equipment, position adjustments, transfers and movement during activities.

Able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. without assistance.

Dexterity to operate computer daily.

Auditory and visual acuity to operate computers and phones or mobile devices.

Auditory and visual acuity to interact with guests, participants and staff on a daily basis.

Able to successfully manage multiple, high priority tasks in a fast-paced and often times crowded and noisy environment.

Possess a valid Utah driver’s license and meet criteria to drive company vehicles
