Using the Dewey Decimal Classification System in Middle School By Pamela Hurst The objective of this presentation is to: Provide a definition of the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC) Identify the 10 major classes of DDC Provide examples of books that can be found in each of 10 major classes of the DDC This presentation is designed for middle school students. The DDC is the most popular method used to organize books in the media center. The DDC arranges mostly non-fiction books numerically into 10 major classes. Each of the 10 classes is then divided further. Each book is given a number which helps us easily find books that we love to read and books that we need for research. We find books in the media center by following the numbers printed on each book. Years ago we located books by searching through cards in drawers – the card catalog. Today we locate books by following numbers printed on the book. 000-009 General Works 100-199 200-299 300-399 400-499 500-599 600-699 700-700 800-899 900-999 (encyclopedias, magazines & almanacs) Philosophy & Psychology Religion & Methodology Social Science Language Math & Science Medicine & Technology Arts & Entertainment Literature History & Geography Books found in the 000-009 include: Books found in the 100-199 section include: Books found in the 200-299 section include: Books found in the 300-399 section include: Books found in the 400-499 section include: Books found in the 500-599 section include: https://www.georgiastandards.org/CommonCore/Common%20Core%20Frameworks/CC GPS_Math_Grade7_CurriculumMap.pdf * Books found in the 600-699 section include: * Books found in the 700-799 section include: Read a Review of Play Ball http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/157 90889-little-league Read a Review of American R & B http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1 3773057-american-r-b Books found in the 800-899 section include: * * Books found in the 900-999 section include: Read a Review of Civil War for Kids http://www.commonsensemedia.org/bookreviews/the-civil-war Read a Review of Washington DC with Kids http://www.amazon.com/Fodors-AroundWashington-Travel-Guide/dp/0891419748 An old fashion card-catalog.
