Journal Entry Think about a time in your life when you have been exposed to something or someone new. This could be a new classmate, teacher, parental figure, class, activity, experience etc. Consider…. What were your preconceived ideas or thoughts about this person/experience? What were these pre conceived ideas based on? As you go to know this person, or experienced this new event did your perspective change? What helped you to change your mind? Example Experience: Last year my aunt invited me to join her yoga class as part of her gym’s “Free Week of Classes” promotion. I really didn’t want to go because I had seen people do yoga before and I thought it looked like a weak exercise, just stretching and lying around. But my aunt can be very convincing, so before you know it I am at my first yoga class. Let me just say how incredibly wrong I was to think that yoga is a “weak” form of exercise! I could barely keep up and by the end of class I felt exhausted. After practicing on and off for a year I feel that I have really added a new challenge to my work out routine! My first year teaching I had a student, Ashley, in my class whom I was told by many other teachers was a “terrible student”, exhibited “terrible behavior” was “rude to her teachers” etc. Needless to say I was terrified to teach my 8th hour class. At first, the other teachers who had warned me about Ashley seemed to be right. She would never participate in class, put her head down on her desk, challenge me in front of the class and refuse to complete her work. I thought I was a terrible teacher for not knowing what to do or how to help. It all came to a boiling point one afternoon when Ashley yelled at me in front of the class, telling me I was a “terrible teacher “and stormed out of class. I met her in the hall and she continued to yell at me. I suggested she go to the deans and to meet me afterschool. Doubting that she would show up, I was packing up my materials in my classroom after 9 th hour and was prepared to leave when I saw Ashley standing in my door way. She had come to apologize for her actions and offered to stay after school to finish the assignment. As she sat completing her assignment, I was in shock. I couldn’t believe that this was the same person. When she finished her assignment and turned it in I said, “Ashley, I really appreciate you coming in afterschool to make this up, can I ask is there anything else going on in your life that is frustrating you?” Ashley stared at me for a moment, took a deep breath and said, “My family is so messed up. I feel like they just don’t care about me any more. My sister is the one who gets the good grades, is smart and pretty and I am just a screw up. I don’t get school, I am behind in all my classes. They just give me whatever I want to keep me happy, but besides that they just don’t care anymore”. It was at this point I realized that Ashley wasn’t just trying to be a “bad kid”, she just felt like no one cared about her.
