Senior English – Week Five
Tuesday, September 8, 2015
Objective: To continue reading Beowulf and to summarize what has been read so far.
Activities:
1) Warm-up/Quick write: Summarize what we have read in Beowulf since the hero arrived at
Hrothgar’s castle to help the Danes defeat Grendel. You may create a timeline, a bulleted list, or
write the summary in a paragraph. Though there are more, you should have at least 10
developments.
2) Continue reading Beowulf and completing the study guide.
Note: The Unit Test over Beowulf will be Friday, and study guides will be collected at that time.

Objective: To read 2-3 sections of Beowulf and to complete the study guide by Friday.
Activities:
1) Warm-up/grammar practice: Correct the punctuation and other sentence errors in the
following:
Beowulf killed Grendel’s mother with a sword that had belonged to a giant. Since Hrunting failed
to kill the hag. God provided the sword, he also used it to behead Grendel’s body. After he had
killed both Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Hrothgar gave Beowulf many gifts to take home with
him.
2) Read more of Beowulf and work on the study guide. The study guide will be due Friday when
you take the test.

Objective: To finish Beowulf!
Activities:
1) Warm-up/quick write - Finish the following story starter:
It was my 18th birthday when my parents decided to tell me the truth about my origins. They
began by saying that I was not an ordinary human . . . .
2) Finish reading Beowulf.
Tomorrow: Unit test over Beowulf, professional writing (emails, cover letters and resumes), and runons/fragments. You may use any notes we have taken, the study guide and even the copy of the poem. I
have decided to post-pone the study guide being due until Monday; however, you might want to
complete it anyway for tomorrow’s test.

Objective: To assess students’ understanding of Beowulf, sentence fragments and run-ons, and
professional writing.
Activity: No warm-up today.
Unit One Test: You may use all power-point notes and packets.
*Five composition books will be collected for grading.
