- negotiate a treaty with Britain
(to stay away from war = neutrality)
- Outcome:
(1) The U.S. would pay off all British debts! (for pre-revolutionary issues)
(2) British promised to evacuate their American posts. (Canadian-American border) –
liars!
(3) British will pay for damages inflicted by impressments (did not promise it would stop!)
Important: *Federalists gained the benefits of impressment payments = sectionalism
(4) War was avoided
(5) Washington’s popularity was compromised
Results:
(1) Dem-Republicans
(2) Western settlers HATED John Jay’s treaty! Why?
(3) Stronger ties between Federalist (Rich), Fed. Government, and British

Spain!)
