Lab Safety Procedures: SAFETY VIDEO Rule #1: Only perform lab work when your teacher is present. Unsupervised lab work is NEVER allowed. Rule #2: BEFORE beginning a lab, you should ALWAYS read, reread, and think about the lab assignment, so you can properly prepare. Rule #3: Know where ALL safety equipment is located in the lab. These should include: safety shower, eye wash, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, exits, and evacuation routes. Rule #4: ALWAYS wear proper lab attire: Safety Goggles Closed shoes Pants or long skirts Long hair pulled back Rule #5: ALWAYS Avoid keep your work area clear of clutter. unnecessary walking during the lab. Rule #6: Always DOUBLE check chemical labels, to ensure you have the right substance and at the right concentration. Rule #7: If you need to transfer chemicals from a common supply to your own container, NEVER return those to the original container. Rule #8: NEVER reach OVER an open flame. NEVER carry LIT candles or burners from one place to another. NEVER leave a burner unattended. Rule #9: NEVER taste or eat the laboratory materials. NEVER eat or drink in the lab Keep ALL items out of your mouth while doing lab. Rule #10: When you need to smell something, ALWAYS waft it, never smell it directly. Rule #11: NEVER look directly down into a test tube, view it from the side. NEVER point the test tube toward another person or yourself. NEVER put a test tube directly into the Bunsen burner flame. NEVER heat ANYTHING in a closed container. Rule #12: ALWAYS IMMEDIATELY report any lab accident, no matter how small you think it is. Rule #13: In case of a chemical spill that gets on your skin or clothes, tell your teacher IMMEDIATELY, so that we can start the shower. If you get a chemical in your eye, IMMEDIATELY tell your teacher and begin flushing out your eyes, at the eye wash station in the prep room. Rule #14: NEVER handle broken glass. Lab accidents WILL happen. Tell your teacher, IMMEDIATELY. Your teacher will dispose of the broken glass. Rule #15: ALWAYS follow disposal directions carefully, and make sure to dispose of chemicals in the right container. NEVER take chemicals or materials out of the lab. Rule #16: Treat all lab specimens with respect and dispose of them properly. Rule #17: Be sure to ALWAYS clean lab materials, thoroughly, unless told otherwise, by your teacher. Wash, rinse, drain, and dry all glassware. Return all equipment to their designated areas. Rule #18: ALWAYS wash your hands before leaving the lab. Make sure that the water and gas has been shut off. Rule #19: If you are unclear or confused about a procedure, ALWAYS ask for clarifications. If in doubt, ASK! Rule #20: ALL students are expected to follow these rules, as well as, any additional printed or verbal safety instructions. Rule #21: ANY student that is misbehaving, or showing disregard for safety during any lab, will be removed from the lab, and will be subject to other disciplinary actions. Reminder: In order to participate in lab, you MUST be dressed for lab. You MUST have the lab safety agreement signed, in order, to participate. Mandatory Signature Paper ALL students are REQUIRED to get the lab safety agreement signed by their parents, and each student MUST also sign it. FAILURE to get this paper signed, results in NOT being able to participate in labs. ALL forms are due NO LATER than AUGUST 8th, 2014. Lab Safety Test Your lab safety test will be on Monday, August 11, 2014. The open answer paper you filled out today, during the notes, will serve as your Study Guide for the test.
