LABORATORY SAFETY TRAINING ABRAHAM BALDWIN AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE OUR MISSION… In the Science Department at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is to provide safe laboratory environments for our students, faculty, and staff. The ABAC Sciences Laboratory Safety Policies and Procedures along with OSHA policies are enforced to keep our laboratory facilities, students, faculty and staff safe. LAB ATTIRE AND PROTECTION FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE RULES WILL RESULT IN NOT BEING ALLOWED TO ENTER LABS AND RECEIVING A ZERO FOR THAT LAB BEFORE ENTERING A LAB… 1. Wear appropriate lab attire 2. Have chemical splash safety goggles 3. Throw away all drink containers, food products AND wrappers 1. APPROPRIATE LAB ATTIRE: SHOES • Shoes must be worn in the laboratory. • No sandals, sandals with socks, open-toe shoes, clogs, flats, ballerina flats, slippers, crocs, or any shoe that does not completely cover the foot. • Leather shoes are preferred. • Ankles and tops of feet must be completely covered. SHOES: WHAT TO WEAR SHOES: WHAT NOT TO WEAR 1. APPROPRIATE LAB ATTIRE: SHIRTS •Shirts must have sleeves. •No sleeveless, spaghetti strap, halter top, strapless, open-back, or tank tops. •Wool and cotton are preferred materials. •No loose/flowing sleeves or sleeves with holes down the arm. SHIRTS: WHAT TO WEAR SHIRTS: WHAT NOT TO WEAR 1. APPROPRIATE LAB ATTIRE: OVERALL OUTFIT The following must be completely covered: •Body below the waist •Ankles and tops of feet •Midriff, stomach, shoulders, and back OUTFIT: WHAT TO WEAR • The lab teacher, laboratory coordinators, Science Department Head, and the Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics have the overall authority of determining if an outfit is appropriate based on the ABAC Sciences Laboratory Safety Policies and Procedures. • If an article of clothing or outfit is deemed inappropriate, the student will be asked to change or will receive a grade of a zero for that lab period. • Students will not be allowed to enter the lab if dressed inappropriately. OUTFIT: WHAT NOT TO WEAR PANTS: WHAT NOT TO WEAR Leggings or similar items of tight-fitting clothing are not allowed to be worn in the laboratory. Leggings are typically a blend of nylon, polyester, and spandex/lycra, which are not recommended when working with chemicals and/or fire. APPROPRIATE LAB ATTIRE • No loose hair, neckties, head coverings or unconstrained clothing. • Old clothes are recommended. • Natural fibers are recommended. • Any violation of the lab dress code will result in not being able to enter the laboratory facilities. SAFETY GOGGLES • Students are not allowed to work in the laboratory without the correct chemical splash safety goggles unless explicitly directed by the instructor. • Goggles must be worn the ENTIRE time students are in the laboratory. • Purchase appropriate goggles at the ABAC Bookstore. Chemical Splash Lab Safety goggles WITH a splash shield must be worn during lab The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for Occupational and Face Protection, ANSI Z87.1-2003 Section 7.3(3) page 15 “The teacher must “make a judgment in selection of the appropriate protective equipment so that the protection is greater than the estimated hazards.” Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA 1910.1450 (Laboratory Standard) Section D(6) – School laboratories should include “protective apparel compatible with the required degree of protection for substances being handled.” This rule is supported by OSHA Regulation 29CFR, Part number 1910.1450 AppA, Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories https://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_docu ment?p_table=standards&p_id=10107 Lab goggles WITHOUT a splash shield or proper vents will not be allowed to be worn in the ABAC Laboratory Facilities Failure to follow this rule will result in a grade of an zero for the lab class and a grade of an “F” in the lab class. Correct choice of Lab Safety Goggles! BEFORE ENTERING A LAB… 1. Wear appropriate lab attire 2. Have chemical splash safety goggles 3. Throw away all drink containers, food products AND wrappers 3. FOOD AND DRINK • NO FOOD, BEVERAGES, CHEWING GUM, CANDY, COUGH DROPS, OR CHEWING TOBACCO ARE ALLOWED. • No food or drink containers allowed inside laboratories. • NO water bottles, food bags and wrappers, and candy wrappers. • Do not use your hand or any container to drink water or any chemical while inside the laboratory. LABORATORY PROCEDURES GENERAL LAB RULES • Never eat or drink anything in the laboratory. • No smoking or chewing tobacco. • Keep aisles clear of belongings. • Leave all technology devices and personal belongings in your book bag and/or store under the lab bench. • Never work alone in the laboratory. • No horseplay is allowed. • You may only be present in the laboratory if you are a member of the class. PREVENT CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION • Wear gloves to protect skin. • Remove gloves before using technology devices. • Remove and discard of gloves before leaving laboratory facility. • Avoid touching hair, face, eyes, and clothing while wearing gloves and working with chemicals in lab. LABELING GLASSWARE • Label glassware properly AT ALL TIMES. • Use wax pencil and Sharpies to label glassware. DO NOT USE PAPER LABELS! • Write the following information on a container used to store chemicals or solutions: − Student name − Date − Class and instructor − Contents of the container BEFORE LEAVING A LAB… • Dispose of waste into appropriate WASTE containers. • Wash and clean glassware used. • Return all equipment, glassware, and materials to designated locations. • Wipe down lab bench. • Throw away trash. • Straighten equipment drawer and remove any broken glassware or extra equipment. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE RULES WILL RESULT IN NOT BEING 0 ALLOWED TO ENTER LABS AND RECEIVING A ZERO FOR THAT LAB GOGGLES MAY BE REMOVED AFTER EXITING THE LAB.
