Algebra 1 Midterm Study Guide Check-List

Highlighted in yellow means possible short answer show all work problems

1. Writing expressions using variables from a phrase.

2. Know the difference between and how to classify Natural, Whole, Integer, Rational, Irrational, Real.

3. Ordering fractions/decimals least to greatest or greatest to least (understand if it is negative the larger the number the smaller it really is)

4. Evaluating (Plugging in values) for expressions.

5. Solving equations/knowing when it is an identity or no solution ( identity 12 = 12, no solution 6 = 9).

6. Story problems with variables (use your variable for what you know the least amount about)

7. Solving for given variables (get that variable alone by reverse PEMDAS and undo everything).

8. Mean, median, mode, range (mean = average, median = middle number, mode = number that occurs the most, range = difference in largest and smallest number)

9. Solving and graphing inequalities and compound inequalities on a number line (plot the number, open/closed circle, arrow going left/right)

10. Solving proportions (cross multiply and solve)

11. Writing proportions to solve percent and wholes and similar figures (is = part, of = whole)

12. Maps and scale drawings.

13. Percent of change. ( (original amount – new amount) / original amount)

14. Probability with and without replacing.

15. Sketching graphs of different situations plotted with time. ( do time always on the x-axis)

16. Know if a relation is a function (each x has only one y/ vertical line test)

17. Evaluating function rules ( f(x) = x + 4 , f(8) = 8 + 4 so f(8) = 12)

18. Direct Variation ( y = kx , k = y/x)

19. Finding slope (change in y/change in x or rise/run)

20. Graphing equations (easy way is in Slope-Intercept form y = mx + b, m = slope b = y-intercept)

21. Finding x- and y-intercepts (for x-intercept plug 0 in for y and solve, for y-intercept plug 0 in for x and solve)

22. Writing in point-slope form, standard form, slope-intercept form ( y - 𝐲

𝟏

= m(x - 𝐱

𝟏

), 𝐀𝐱 + 𝐁𝐲 =

𝐂 , 𝐲 = 𝐦𝐱 + 𝐛 ).

23. Parallel/Perpendicular lines (parallel lines have the same slope, perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes)

24. Absolute value translations and graphing (horizontal happens on inside and is opposite of sign, vertical is on the outside and with the sign)

25. Solving absolute value inequalities (set up two new inequalities, the second one make negative and flip sign)

26. Systems of equations and possible solutions (parallel lines = no solution, lines that intersect = one solution, same line = infinite solutions)

27. Solving systems of equations by graphing, elimination, or substitution.

28. Story problems with systems of equations ( break even problems, quarters or dimes problems, admission problems, wind problems, etc.)

29. Know coefficients, terms, constants, etc.

30. Properties of real numbers (distributive, associative, commutative, identity)

31. Graphing inequalities ( < or > dashed line, ≥ or ≤ solid line, > or ≥ shade above, < or ≤ shade below)
