COMPOSITION OF MATTER
ELEMENTS AND ATOMS
By Sierra, Rachel, Haley
What are elements?


Elements are the building blocks of all matter.
Elements cannot be broken down into simpler
substances.

Examples:
Oxygen
 Carbon
 Gold
 Copper
 Iron


A complete listing of the elements appears in the
periodic table.

Major Roles of Elements in the body…

Oxygen
 Reacts
with glucose or food to produce ATP Energy and
the Carbon dioxide that we breathe out.
 Makes up 65.0% of our body mass.
Major Roles of Elements in the body…

Carbon
 Carbon
is required to form
proteins, carbohydrates, fats
and nucleic acid.
 Also helps determine the
body structure.
 Makes up 18.5% of our body mass.
Major Roles of Elements in the body...

Hydrogen
 Hydrogen
atoms help to form water molecules, which
are essential in our bodies.
 Hydrogen also influences the pH of body fluids.
 Makes up 9.5% of our body mass.
Major Roles of Elements in the body…

Nitrogen
▫ Nitrogen is found in many organic molecules,
including proteins and nucleic acids that make up
DNA.
▫ Makes up 3.2% of our body mass.

Other Elements found in the body…
Less than 3.9% of the body
Iodine
Calcium
Phosphorus
Potassiun
Sulfur
Sodium
What are Atoms?


Atoms are the smallest particle that still retains its
special properties.
Atoms are the building blocks of elements.
Atomic Symbol…

Every element is designated by a one- or two-letter
chemical shorthand called a atomic symbol.
