COMPOSITION OF MATTER ELEMENTS AND ATOMS By Sierra, Rachel, Haley What are elements? Elements are the building blocks of all matter. Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances. Examples: Oxygen Carbon Gold Copper Iron A complete listing of the elements appears in the periodic table. Elements in the human body Oxygen Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen 3.2 % Nitrogen 9.5% Hydrogen 65% oxygen 18.5% Carbon Major Roles of Elements in the body… Oxygen Reacts with glucose or food to produce ATP Energy and the Carbon dioxide that we breathe out. Makes up 65.0% of our body mass. Major Roles of Elements in the body… Carbon Carbon is required to form proteins, carbohydrates, fats and nucleic acid. Also helps determine the body structure. Makes up 18.5% of our body mass. Major Roles of Elements in the body... Hydrogen Hydrogen atoms help to form water molecules, which are essential in our bodies. Hydrogen also influences the pH of body fluids. Makes up 9.5% of our body mass. Major Roles of Elements in the body… Nitrogen ▫ Nitrogen is found in many organic molecules, including proteins and nucleic acids that make up DNA. ▫ Makes up 3.2% of our body mass. Nitrogen Base Other Elements found in the body… Less than 3.9% of the body Iodine Calcium Phosphorus Potassiun Sulfur Sodium What are Atoms? Atoms are the smallest particle that still retains its special properties. Atoms are the building blocks of elements. Atomic Symbol… Every element is designated by a one- or two-letter chemical shorthand called a atomic symbol. Work Cited "Cellular Respiration Tutorial." Hartnell College Biology Tutorials.
