A Brighter Path Foundation 2012 ANN U AL RE PO RT - A VISIO N O F INDEPEND ENCE “Tracy’s Little Red School House is a wonderful place for our son, with valuable services dedicated to helping people who are blind or visually impaired.” Laura Scott, mother of firsttime SEE participant Preston Scott MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP David Barnwell, President, A Brighter Path Foundation Ann Johnston, Board Chair, A Brighter Path Foundation “As the community continues to invest in our mission, we’re investing back in the community. In the past four years, we’ve almost tripled the services provided to people who are blind or visually impaired.” David Barnwell, President, A Brighter Path Foundation 2012 HAS BEEN AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR for A Brighter Path Foundation as we support the programs and services offered by Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind. Together, we have answered the call for greater access to independent living skills, specialized low vision care and assistive technology. In May, we opened the doors to Tracy’s Little Red School House in Winston-Salem, an independent learning center serving adults and children who are blind or visually impaired. Our Sensitivity to Blindness initiative, including The Blind Side, a new classroom-based awareness program for sighted individuals, builds understanding for the unique challenges facing individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The IFB Community Low Vision Center provides critical services to those who are blind or visually impaired in 70 counties statewide. In 2012, we expanded access to assistive technology through our Recycle for Sight program and we grew our footprint statewide through the Focus on Literacy and Mobile Low Vision Care programs. To our donors, community partners and Foundation Board, we express our sincerest thanks for providing us with the support, resources and advocacy that have paved the way for our success today and in the years to come. TRACY’S LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE OPENS ITS DOORS LIVING, LEARNING & PLAYING On May 2, we celebrated the opening of Tracy’s Little Red School House, an independent learning center located on the IFB campus in Winston-Salem. Serving adults and children who are blind or visually impaired, this unique community resource fosters maximum personal independence. The Daily Living Skills Lab emphasizes Orientation & Mobility and features a kitchen, laundry and bedroom. A fully equipped Computer Center provides students with the training on assistive technology to give them the necessary skills to compete in the sighted world, and our Audio/Braille Library is wellstocked with a current selection of titles for recreational reading. The School House also includes an arts and crafts room, large meeting rooms, a playground and garden. In addition, it provides a new home for the Student Enrichment Experience (SEE) with a busy calendar of year-round programs, after-school tutoring, cooking classes and a summer camp. Tracy’s Little Red School House is named in honor of Tracy Callaghan, daughter of Jerry and Karen Callaghan who are long-time supporters of IFB. Tracy was a schoolteacher who lost her courageous battle with cancer at age 41. “Tracy’s Little Red School House complements IFB’s existing facilities by providing our employees and those in the community who are blind with greater independence in their daily activities.” Chris Flynt, Director, A Brighter Path Programs STUDENT ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE INDEPENDENCE CHANGES LIVES Preston Scott entered kindergarten this fall with much-improved orientation & mobility skills thanks to the Student Enrichment Experience (SEE) program. Just in his first SEE summer camp, Preston worked hard on using his cane and also made several new friends. “Our family is so grateful to have a local resource like the SEE program,” said Laura Scott, Preston’s mother. “Not only has Preston made tremendous progress with his cane skills, we’ve also benefitted from connecting with other families and vision advocates through SEE.” Since the SEE program moved to Tracy’s Little Red School House, we have been able to expand the services and activities for children like Preston as well as adults who are blind or visually impaired. The Student Enrichment Experience still includes a number of offsite activities, but the new facility allows us to give greater attention to independent living skills such as cooking, Braille and orientation & mobility skills. “Our SEE students and their families are so thrilled with the new facility. It is so important for these children to have a special place to call their own.” Jenny Viars, Student Enrichment Experience Program Coordinator TO VIEW OUR 2012 SEE SUMMER CAMP VIDEO CLICK HERE. INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS SENSITIVITY TO BLINDNESS AND THE BLIND SIDE As part of IFB’s community outreach efforts, we offer Sensitivity to Blindness, a program designed to increase awareness to the unique challenges experienced by people who are blind or visually impaired, and to forge better understanding of what it means to be blind in a sighted world. In 2012, we expanded the Sensitivity to Blindness program by introducing The Blind Side, a classroombased presentation for school-age children that includes orientation & mobility with blindfolds and canes, introduction to Braille, guide dog etiquette, use of “talking products” such as clocks, and conversations with IFB employees who are blind. The Blind Side now serves hundreds of students across several counties. “I know we are making a difference when parents tell me that their children are coming home from school excited about having learned what it’s like being blind.” Chris Flynt, Director, A Brighter Path Programs INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS RECYCLE FOR SIGHT PAYS IT FORWARD Recycle for Sight came together as a unique partnership between IFB’s Community Low Vision Center and the North Carolina Lions Club. Together, we gather and refurbish used magnifiers and other low vision equipment so they can be redistributed to others in need. The program began with eyeglasses, and the expansion to low vision equipment has greatly enhanced our ability to provide assistive technology to North Carolinians in need. “IFB is an absolutely vital statewide resource for people who are blind or visually impaired. Our services and outreach programs are touching so many people and providing access to the resources and specialized care they need to live more vibrant, independent lives.” Amber Terrase, Director, Low Vision and Advancement Services FINANCIAL STATEMENT Lynn Shields is the Low Vision Technician for IFB’s Community Low Vision Center. She works with clients to match them with the assistive technology and other resources to maximize their independence and improve their quality of life. “A huge component of my job is listening so I can understand where they are having difficulties and identify the solutions that are best for them,” said Lynn. “It’s incredibly rewarding to connect people with the tools that enable them to resume their work and their hobbies. My job is helping people engage in life again.” Lynn Shields, Low Vision Technician at IFB’s Community Low Vision Center CLICK HERE FOR A VIDEO BY LYNN SHIELDS A consolidated report of contributions, grants, special events and other support for A Brighter Path Foundation and Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind, Inc. IFB EMPLOYEE TIM LACROIX PASSES ALONG THE CAN-DO SPIRIT As a computer trainer in TAD’s (Training & Development) Room and Tracy’s Little Red School House, Tim LaCroix navigates easily across the screen. “I was one of IFB’s original students when it came to learning the computer,” he said. With encouragement from Chris Flynt, Director of A Brighter Path Programs, Tim purchased a computer along with JAWS screen reading software. Tim’s interest in computers was noticed by Dan Boucher who encouraged him to register for the NIB Business Basics course offered by National Industries for the Blind/Hadley School for the Blind. After completing the program, Tim became more involved with computer training, first to IFB employees and this past year, to children in the SEE summer camps. “As a teacher, it is incredibly rewarding to show people new skills on the computer that make their lives easier and help them become more independent.” For Tim, teaching is all about paying it forward. “When I was growing up, my mom encouraged me to be independent and to try new things. She never let my lack of sight limit me in any way.” “My independence is what has enabled me to have a good job, own a home and pursue my interests like woodworking and home renovation. I want to pass along that same ‘can-do’ spirit to our employees and the children who attend Tracy’s Little Red School House.” Tim LaCroix, shown working with Jacob, a SEE summer camp participant FOUNDATION BOARD AND STAFF BOARD MEMBERS Ann Johnston, Chair Retired, Reynolds American, Inc.
