Rocky Mountain Conference of The United Methodist Church Job Description Position Title: Reports to: Department: Date: Flood Recovery - Communications Associate Flood Recovery Director April 22, 2014 General Purpose The Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church, in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), will provide recovery services for survivors of the September 2013 floods in the affected Colorado counties. The Flood Recovery – Communications Associate is a part time, one year staff position. Essential Duties/Responsibilities The Communications Associate will help to develop and implement an overall communications strategy to communicate United Methodist-sponsored recovery efforts to affected communities needing assistance, and to United Methodists within the Rocky Mountain Conference and throughout the General Church. Through this strategy and its implementation, individuals will learn that the United Methodist Church is involved and providing active leadership for the long term flood recovery. Other Duties/Responsibilities Assist in the development and guide the implementation of the communication strategies for the Flood Recovery Project. Develop messaging for the flood recovery project, including for programs and initiatives occurring throughout the area that support the vision of UMCOR and the Rocky Mountain Conference. Identify primary audiences for communications Ensure consistent, high-quality, appropriate delivery of communications, and evaluate and measure strategy effectiveness. Develop methods and strategies that provide clear communication channels throughout the Rocky Mountain Conference and to the communities where we serve. Write, edit and publish high-quality, consistent and compelling communications, including the website and social media of both conferences. Use images and photography to enhance communications. 1 Capture critical stories to spread the witness of the work that the Rocky Mountain Conference/UMCOR team and Methodist volunteers are doing inside the conferences and beyond. Coordinate with both Conference staff and volunteers to ensure all external communications have a consistent tone and presentation to reach intended audiences. Oversee the development, content and maintenance of the Flood Recovery Project web presence. Assess the status and effectiveness of overall flood recovery communication efforts, identifying areas where new initiatives and improvements are needed. Work in an effective and positive manner with Flood Recovery Director other organizational staff, partner-agency and government agency staff to develop full understanding of available resources and processes for accessing resources. Positively and accurately represent The Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church in all interactions with clients and partner agencies. Ability to work without close supervision on assigned duties; willing to seek and accept supervision as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Duties None Job Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Ability: Experience in developing and implementing communications strategies Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills Demonstrated competency in use of multimedia, computer, video, audio, digital, and social media technology. Advanced ability in writing, media production, web site management, graphic design and use of computer software applicable to the position, ie. Microsoft word, excel, power point, publisher, Adobe Connect and other communication software. Experience in and engagement with diverse social media genres. Professionalism in diverse forms of service. Demonstrated emotional maturity and stability. Eligible candidates will be required to successfully complete safety screening and disaster case management training. 2 Education or Formal Training: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent. Experience: Two years’ experience and demonstrated success in the communications field. Intermediate level proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Able to utilize word processing, database, and spreadsheet software; able to demonstrate ability to learn new and/or customized software. Working Environment: This is a part time position. This position will require some travel across the areas impacted by the 2013 Colorado floods to visit, churches, volunteers and work sites.
