The societies can compete with each other for resources through violence or other forms of conflict. Or they can share resources through cooperation and trade. In the long run, different cultures can also blend. Sadly, in some areas of the world, competing societies and cultures have fallen into cycles of conflict that are difficult to stop. genocideinbosnia.wordpress Observe this picture. Bosnia-Herzegovina Cultural conflicts today are often worst where empires used to overlap. For example, Eastern Europe is an area where armies and peoples from the old empires of Western Europe ran into opposing armies and peoples from the old empire of Russia and the Ottoman Empire of Turkey. These empires were based on different religions. Western Europe was mainly Catholic and Protestant. Russia was Russian Orthodox (a form of Christianity), while the Ottoman Empire was Islamic. Over the centuries, all over Eastern Europe, power has shifted back and forth. This is part of the history behind the tiny country of Bosnia-Herzegovina. For most of this century, the present territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina was part of Yugoslavia, a country made up of a patchwork of different cultures and religions that were left there by the old empires. Yugoslavia began to break apart in 1991, shortly after the Soviet Union fell apart. In 1992, Bosnia-Herzegovina became an independent nation at the same time that other parts of Yugoslavia were also becoming independent. Bosnia-Herzegovina is a very mixed place, with various kinds of Christians, Muslims, and other peoples living and working side by side, as well as intermarrying. It also contains people who regard themselves as ethnic Bosniaks, Serbs, Croatians, Albanians, and members of other groups from the region. Right away, the neighboring countries of Serbia and Croatia began to try to carve Bosnia-Herzegovina apart along ethnic lines, and to push other people off of land that they wanted only for Serbs or Croatians. From 1992 to 1995, Bosnia-Herzegovina was overrun by this ethnic war. In 1995, the United States helped to stop the fighting, but today the country is still unstable with a poor economy and many refugees who are unable to return to their homes.
