The following document is a course syllabus for the first unit, The Progressive Era. You will be expected to follow along with
the readings listed and meet the deadline of all assignments.
All assignments MUST be completed in advance of the day that they are listed. Text readings are to be completed on your own.
While they are not the sole source of course information they will complement your classroom notes and lectures and can be
used in the event of an absence from class.
This syllabus is subject to change throughout the unit. Make sure to keep it with you and bring it to class each day. I DO NOT

Objectives for Unit (SWBAT):
- Describes the scene for America in the 20th century
- Introduce to the Progressive era and begin to build an understanding of the changes taking place in American
society.
- Evaluate the role that big business plays in a free market economy
- Theorize the possibility of a new “Progressive Era” in American society.
- Assess the role of media in influencing policy (then and now).
- Identify and understand the issues with child labor and the steps to prevent it during the Progressive Era.
- Identify areas of the world where child labor is still a problem.
- Examine and analyze photographs depicting child labor during the progressive Era.
- Access the impact of the Triangle shirtwaist factory fire on future progressive legislation.
- Examine the federal government’s approach to progressive reform
- Analyze how the Bull Moose Party helped Wilson win the 1912 election and identify Wilson’s progressive reforms
and their limits.
- Examine three unfinihed areas of the Progressive Era and evaluate contemporary policy.
- Interpret the style of realism and its relation to the Progressive Era.
- Complete assessment of the Progressive Era.
