Mrs. Kay Smidt’s Lesson Plans November 18-22, 2013 7th grade English: Monday- I will introduce spelling lesson #12 to the students. I will explain the concept of a teleplay to the seventh graders. I will then begin playing the cd of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” Tuesday - Spelling pretest # 12. I will either have students finish listening to the cd of the teleplay or have them read some of the articles from the latest issue of Scope magazine and complete the coordinating exercises. Wednesday – I will explain the concept of reader’s theatre to the seventh graders. I will show students the Spark Notes video of Frankenstein and then have Ashlee, Kordell, and Jacob M present their readers theatre version of a scene from Frankenstein. Thursday-Spelling test # 12. I will have students either read or watch an introduction to White Fang and then have Logan, Geoffrey and Jacob V present their readers theatre version of a scene from White Fang. Friday-. I will have students either read or watch an introduction to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and/or Don Quixote and then have Seth, Tyus and me present their readers theatre version of scenes from at least one of these two novels. Remind students that we will be having our pizza party today at 2:45. English IV: Monday -We do not have class due to an assembly program. Tuesday -100 note cards will be due by the end of the class period. Students should have a preliminary outline to show me tomorrow. Wednesday-I will look at some of the students' preliminary outlines rough drafts. They should have 250 words of their rough drafts done by the end of the class period. Thursday --I will look at some of the students' preliminary outlines rough drafts. They should have 500 words of their rough drafts done by the end of the class period. Friday---I will look at some of the students' preliminary outlines rough drafts. They should have 750 words of their rough drafts done by the end of the class period. English III: Monday -If we have class, students will work on their projects over "The Devil and Tom Walker." If we do not have class (due to the assembly program), students will share these projects on Wednesday. Tuesday- Students will work on their projects over “The Devil and Tom Walker.” I will also leave an assignment in the “Preparing for Standardized Reading Test” book. Wednesday-Students will begin sharing their projects with the class. Thursday-If some students have not yet shared their projects with the class, they will do so. If all students have shared their projects, I will introduce them to the Fireside Poets by discussing with them the information on pp 342-343 and then begin playing the cd of the selected poems of these poets. Friday-I will conclude the discussion of the Fireside Poets and introduce students to the Transcendentalists by discussing with them the information on pp 368-369. If time allows, we will begin listening to the cd of “Self-Reliance.” Creative Communications: Monday - I will show students the introductory videos of literary classics and have them practice their readers theatre versions of those classics in preparation for their performances to the seventh grade English class later this week. Tuesday-Students will begin working on rewriting the folktale “Conquering Fear” as a readers’ theatre. Wednesday-Students will begin rehearsal of the Thanksgiving version of the Spookley the Square Pumpkin story. Thursday- Students will continue rehearsal of the Thanksgiving version of the Spookley the Square Pumpkin story. Friday- Students will fine tune their rehearsal of the Thanksgiving version of the Spookley the Square Pumpkin story. 8th grade English: Monday-- I will introduce spelling lesson #12 to the students. Students will begin sharing their comparison/contrast essays with the class. Tuesday- Spelling pretest # 12. Students will complete the reading about Pandora from Scope magazine. Wednesday-Students will continue sharing their comparison/contrast essays with the class. Thursday- Spelling test # 12. I will introduce students to the Writing for Assessment assignment (page 4999) in which students compare and contrast the themes of the folktales "the Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson" and "the Wise Old Woman, " which the stuents read in Mrs. Knodel's class. Friday-Students will have time in class to complete the Writing for Assessment assignment. English I: Monday-Students will share their responses to the assigned writing prompt on page 405 and/or the one page persuasive letter (their choice). I will then introduce them to Unit 4 and have them complete the introductory activity on p 433 “What Messages Are Timeless?” Tuesday- I will have students listen to the audiotape of the story “The Sniper on pp 437439 and then write out the answers to questions 1-9, which will be due at the end of the class period. Wednesday- I will discuss the story “The Sniper” with the students. I will then introduce them to the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by discussing the question, “Why do we hurt the ones we love?” on p 460. We will then begin listening to the cd of this story. Thursday-We will finish listening to the cd of “The Scarlet Ibis.” I will then lead students through a discussion of this story and explain the assignment that they will need to complete and hand in by the end of the class period tomorrow. Friday-Due to the 7th grade pizza party, I will be sending students to Mr. Bruckner with the following assignment due at the end of the class period:
