IEM Site Leader Application - 2014-2015 Page 5 International Engagement in Mexico Alcohol and Illegal Drugs Policy (Please Read Carefully) Alcohol use is not permitted during any scheduled International Engagement in Mexico program activities. Alcohol abuse will not be tolerated during any aspect of the International Engagement in Mexico Program. Alcohol abuse is when: 1. Student misses any scheduled event because of the effects of alcohol consumption; 2. A student is unable to complete the service in which they are to be involved; 3. A student becomes ill, incoherent or other incapacity due to the effects of alcohol consumption; 4. A student is disrespectful and inconsiderate of others sharing the same housing; 5. A student engages in an inappropriate behavior toward other individuals as a result of alcohol consumption; 6. A student engages in destructive behavior toward property due to alcohol consumption; 7. A student does not abide by the laws of the country in which they are volunteering (including underage drinking); 8. A student causes embarrassment to the other members of the group, faculty or group site contacts as a result of alcohol consumption; 9. A participant transports alcohol to program sites with the intent of sharing the alcohol with other members of the group; 10. A student drinks in public or rented transportation vehicles (to include vans and buses). 11. There is alcohol consumption in places of lodging (hotels, hostels and other places) and volunteer sites. IEM Site Leader Application - 2014-2015 Page 6 Use of Illegal Drugs Michigan State University has a zero-tolerance policy regarding the possession, use, manufacture, production, sale, exchange or distribution of illegal drugs (as defined by United States Law) by students participating with IEM. I agree that if I choose to drink alcohol, and am of legal age to do so; that I will drink responsibly and within moderation. Before Travel to Mexico: a. Attend all required IEM program meetings b. Preparation of City-Group participants: i. Plan and carryout Team-building activities; Ice-breaker ii. Coordinate fundraising activities and engage students to fully participate c. Program communication with students: i. Inform students about events (i.e. fundraising) ii. Inform students about logistics and itinerary to prepare trip d. Assist Program Leaders to: i. Coordinate travel documents (i.e. passports). ii. Communicate with IEM partner service agencies in Mexico. e. Attend all leadership sessions and meetings. f. Assist in identifying cultural activities to attend/visit in the surrounding areas of assigned city in Mexico; scheduling and engaging students to participate in all IEM pre-trip activities. g. Assist in setting behavioral and modeling expectations for all City Group participants. h. Fundamental rules and guidelines have already been established by the IEM Program; community rules will need to be established by students during last class session i. Take attendance and provide updates during weekly class sessions j. Meet with Program Leaders upon their request; as needed k. Participate in the Office of Study Abroad Safety and Security Briefing Workshop. l. It’s understood as a Site Leader you are required to be a member and participate in all ongoing activities of International Engagement Volunteers (IEV). 2. During program travel: a. Assist Program Leaders in: i. Coordinating travel document logistics (i.e. passports) ii. Communication with IEM partner agencies in Mexico. iii. “Supervising” students (hotel, cultural trips); setting IEM Program behavioral standards; City Group community standards established during pre-trip class sessions; and modeling appropriate and respectful behavior. iv. Organizing cultural trips & activities in the surrounding areas; including transportation if necessary v. Distributing food/taxi stipends. b. Take frequent head counts during transportation to/from airport, agencies, field trips, evening activities and during the evening at the hotel. c. Communicate and update logistical information & expectations to students. d. Coordinate and assist students with transportation to/from their respective service sites. Offer students guidance and motivation to carryout service tasks. ii. Organize students’ involvement to enable the Site Group to use its time most effectively h. Communicate daily itinerary, program activities, reflections schedules, and behavioral expectations to the Site group. i. Recognition of students i. Throughout the IEM Program be observant and actively recognize students’ strengths and assist them to overcome their limitations. ii. Monitor student attendance, participation, and service and performance. j. Be prompt and participate in all meetings scheduled with Program Leaders. k. Be attentive to all IEM participants’ health issues (emotional, physical, mental, etc.) and overall well-being of all IEM participants. l. Immediately report any major incidences threatening the safety and welfare of IEM participants (rule violations, alcohol abuse, drug use, etc.) to Program Leaders *Personal cell phones or Program cell phones should be active at all times 3. After travel: a. Evaluation – dissemination and collection of participants’ feedback forms b. Assist with planning post-trip City Group sharing activities. c. Provide evaluative feedback to Program Leaders and Program Coordinators to enhance IEM Program safety and security; IEM Program outcomes (service and academic); IEM Program leadership effectiveness; IEM service partners’ outcomes; and IEM participants’ enjoyment. 4. Behavior Expectations: a. Serve as a role model by adhering to all IEM Program rules and expectations. b. Display a positive “can do” attitude at all times. c. Demonstrate flexibility in response to IEM Program changes and challenges. d. Responsible alcohol use. i. *Note: Need to sign the Alcohol Responsibility forms required by MSU e. Care for IEM participants and in particular the members of your assigned Site Group. f. Have fun! g. Lead from the front. h.
