Request for Proposals
Exploratory Grant Proposals
Fiscal Year 2014
Program Features: Highly innovative and transformative ideas to advance fundamental research or the
translation of discoveries to significant clinical applications. The program should reflect new ideas of the
proposing investigators or a new collaboration between one faculty each in AHC and CSE.
Research Areas: Proposals can be in any area of engineering that is related to biomedicine and health, with
the expectation that the research aims to strengthen University of Minnesota capabilities in addressing
significant biomedical and health problems using engineering approaches. Proposals in Cardiovascular
Engineering,
Neuroengineering,
Cellular
and
Molecular
Bioengineering,
Medical
and
Biological
Imaging, and Medical Devices research are particularly encouraged. These programs should involve
fundamental or translational science, and should be designed with a specific hypothesis or deliverable that can
produce pilot data for seeking new external funding or for providing the basis for new and significant
intellectual property. Preliminary data are not required but the applicants should demonstrate their ability
and expertise to succeed with the proposed research.
Research Proposal: The research proposal must have a well defined hypothesis or deliverable. Priority will
be given to explore novel ideas with collaborative efforts by faculty from AHC and CSE, and to projects that
are likely to lead to external funding. All PIs and Co-Is must be IEM members, or must have submitted an
application for IEM membership at the time of the proposal submission. Applicants who received IEM seed
grant funding in previous years may re-apply with justification of outstanding progress in terms of successful
external funding.
Project Period: The project period is for a full calendar year of 2014.
Proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Scientific Strength
Novelty
Potential to Generate New External Funding
Expertise of Investigators
Strength of Collaboration between AHC and CSE
Deadline: Applications are due by October 16, 2013 at 5:00 pm
Questions and application submissions regarding any IEM grant program may be directed to:
Adam Klein (klei0115@umn.edu), 612-624-8483.
