TROY UNIVERSITY MASTER SYLLABUS SORRELL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS MGT 4471 Leadership and Change Prerequisite: MGT 3300/entry level prerequisites. Course Description: A study of leadership and change concepts as applied to an organizational setting. The course covers the foundational concepts of leadership, motivational theories, and organizational change theories and practices, aimed at the application of these theories, practices, and concepts in an organizational setting, designed to enable an achievement of organizational goals and objectives. Applications develop critical thinking skills about the concepts. Student Learning Objectives: On completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Illustrate the common characteristics of open or complex systems as they apply to an organization. 2. Differentiate leadership ideas, contingency leadership theories, and emerging leadership theories, including trait theories of leadership, transactional leadership, and transformational leadership. 3. Compare and contrast different motivational theories that are applied in the workplace (content theories, process theories and goal setting). 4. Summarize social influence and power, and explain their relationship to leadership. 5. Interpret values, attitudes and how they are influenced by a leader and expressed in employee behavior. 6. Discriminate between multiple theories and practices of the implementation of organizational change, beginning with Lewin’s three-phase process of change.
