West Port High School
Fall 2015 Course Syllabus/Parent Notification Letter
Course Title: Elementary Statistics
Instructor: Dr. Sabrina David
Room: 08-018
Office Hours: Lunch B
Instructor Email: Sabrina.David@marion.k12.fl.us
Textbook: Algebra II, published by Pearson especially for the Florida standards
Notes: This course will include some graphing and calculator work. Part of this course is word
problems, which are great because they teach us that what we are learning is actually useful.
Optional Textbook: Elementary Statistics, 12th Edition,Triola
You have several options on accessing your textbook:
The software that you will be provided for this course includes the online textbook. Some find it
a inconvenient to scroll through pages and read text online, and as a result, download and print sections
and /or problems that they wish to review .Others find the online text sufficient for their purposes. As
you work with problems and concepts online, the program will refer you to text page numbers that relate
to the problems that you are studying. If you are comfortable with no text in your hand, the online book
will provide sufficient keys for your study.
I will note that often, during lecture, I will refer to exercises in the text, and on occasion some may wish
to download and print some specific problems for more intense review.
Materials needed: (students unable to afford these, please see Guidance, they can help!)
1. Pencil
2. Paper for notes
3. Graph paper
4. Two folders with prongs or one 1" binder with a divider.
5. Calculator: may be scientific but a graphing calculator is (TI-83/84+) recommended.
Course Description: This course includes a study of descriptive statistics, probability theory, random
and binomial variables, linear correlation and regression, normal distributions, confidence intervals and
hypothesis tests.
This course will utilize www.CourseCompass.Com, software which most of you have used in earlier
courses. You will find the course calendar, lecture notes, homework assignments and schedules, online
tests, practice problems, chapter quizzes, and your grade book at this site. You receive access to this site
with the MyMathLab software. I will give you your access code and review with you how to maneuver
around the site the week of class. You will find it very user friendly and easy and convenient to use.
While problems with the site should be rare, you may try http://247pearsoned.custhelp.com or you may
call the help desk at 1-800-677-6337.
Homework: You will find the homework schedule and assignments on line and you will submit your
homework on line. You will have up to a week and three chances to submit a perfect homework paper.
You will be prompted if you work a problem wrong, and you will be able to see a sample problem and
ask for solution tutorials for a similar problem. If you submit a partially completed paper the grade will
reflect the % completion. You will be able to submit a paper after the due date, but you will have to
obtain a one time access code from me and a new due date. Late homework submittals will be penalized
10%. A validated medical or family emergency will result in waiver of the 10% late penalty.
If you do the homework and practice problems, you will be well prepared for the tests, as these
problems are closely aligned with the test questions. Further, the online tests and quizzes have strict
requirements for the form in which an answer must be submitted. Practice with the homework and
tutorial problems will guide you as how to structure your solutions.
You will get immediate feedback on your homework scores and they will be posted in your online grade
book. A missed homework assignment will be posted as a zero.
There will be a lot of extra credit opportunity. Extra credit points will be added to your homework
scores, and will reflect the effort demonstrated.
Quizzes: The Loa or Learning Objective Assessment quiz will be administered at the end of the course.
It is a timed quiz and is a College prepared test. This score will be entered in to your grade sheet as a
quiz grade. There will be other quizzes as well at the instructor’s discretion.
Tests: There will be an online chapter test after each chapter is completed.
You will have two attempts at the test with up to a five day window to complete. I will have the highest
score of the two posted. However, you will be able to submit a test late with documentation of a
personal emergency. There are online mid chapter reviews that are optional.
Midterm/Final Exam: There will be an in class midterm exam approximately midway through the
course. The questions will be closely aligned with the online quizzes and chapter tests. A conscientious
effort on the quizzes and tests will leave you very well prepared for this exam.
Individual Tutoring; There is significant opportunity for help with this course. In addition to the
excellent tutorials built into the online software, I will be available for office hours as noted above.
You may also obtain free online tutoring at http://smarthinking.com through the college account
Your account has 5 hours credited to you at this point. See me if you require another 5 hour credit. You
will have unlimited hours available to you in 5 hour increments.
You can go directly to their homepage for illustrations of what they do. Most students report that the site
is very helpful.
Performance Summaries: You will have continuous feedback on your course performance at your
grade book on the course website.
Grading:
10% Homework
20% Chapter tests (online)
30% midterm
30% final
10% quizzes

course failure due to a violation of the college’s Academic Integrity policy.
Access Services for Students with Disabilities – To ensure students have equal access to educational
opportunities here at the College of Central Florida, students with a disability, serious medical condition, a learning
