Problem Definition
 In baseball it is desirable to hit the ball as far as
possible.
 Players will illegally modify bats with cork, or
sometimes tennis balls.
 Place tennis balls inside aluminum bats to see if the
baseball will travel farther.
Experimental Design
 Experiment Factor:
 Tennis Balls Inside Bat

Treatment Levels: 0, 1, 2
 Blocking Factor:
 Three Different Batters
 Response Variable: Distance(ft)
 Number of Replications: n=6

Bat with 2 Balls Inside
Experimental Design
• Randomized Complete Block Design
Experimental Procedure
 Setup:
 Put sticks in ground labeled with batter and
number of tennis balls
Setup
Procedure:
 Step 1: Helper
hands bat to
batter.
 Step 2: The batter
hits the ball.
 Step 3: Person in
outfield places
stake in ground.
 Step 4: Every nine
hits the distances
were measured
and recorded. This
gave the batters a
break in between
hits.

Conclusions
 Placing tennis balls inside will not help a player hit the
ball out of the park!
 Other Factors:
 Different types of tennis balls
 Different types of bats
 Experience level of batters
