8th Grade Students write an artist
statement to explain the meaning and
thought process behind their Surreal
Hand Drawing .
Do Now: What do you think the
following artwork means.
Objective: You will
brainstorm and organize
thoughts about your
Surreal Hand
composition in order to
write a descriptive
explanation of your
work.
Notes about Artist Statement
1. In classwork section of your sketchbook:
2. Write the name of the artist, title of the work
and date it was created.
3. Jot down 3 facts you learned about the artist
or artwork.
Use the Graphic Organizer to help plan
and write your essay.
• Read Write Think website- pre-writing/rough
draft tool
Do Now: Finish your “Essay Map
Organizer”. If it’s finished- read it over
and see if there are additional items to
add that will improve your description.
• Objective: SWBAT use the writing process in
order to write an artist statement that helps
the reader understand the artist’s intentions.
Writing Process
• Analyze your artwork and think about it’s
meaning and what you learned while making it.
• Use the organizer to write down a rough outline
of your essay.
• Peer Critique- Read/Review/Give Feedback
• Write a rough draft.
• P,Q,P- Read/Review/Give Feedback
• Type final draft.

think formatting might be important?
Objective: You will use Microsoft review & editing tools in
order to peer review the artist statement
Final Draft due end of next class period.
Report directly to lab 108
Art Smart Vocabulary
• Format- the organization, plan, style, or type
of something
Format your word document
• Use default margins.
• Use 12 font size
• Select and easy to read font
style such as Arial, Calibri,
Times New Roman…
• Black text color.
• Type name, class and date
in the upper left hand
corner.
• Give your work a title, bold,
and in quotation marks.
• Indent after each paragraph
by using the tab key.
*Save work as your last name and artist statement- example Pickles_Artist Statement
Rough draft>Edit>Final Draft
 Write your rough draft on Microsoft Word.
 Format your document according to directions.
 Have a peer critique your work and critique their work
using the comment tool and PQP format.
 Save your PQP work to the Student Work folder.
 Delete comments and edit your work for the final draft.
 Save your work to your H drive.
 Post to Edmodo
 Get your group code from Mrs. Chenowith
 Log on with your BCPS username & external password
 Upload document to your “backpack”
 Post as a link in the class blog.
