Background and History

Rococo started in France under King Louis XIV in the early 1700s

King Louis XIV wanted more artistic work to come from The Royal
Academy of Painting and Sculpture

At the academy, Rococo Movement began as a debate over
whether the drawing or the coloring was more important

The Poussinistes believed drawing was more important and The
Rubenistes believe that the coloring was more important

From there Rococo art began to expand to different parts of Europe
like Italy and Germany

Rococo art looks like Baroque art but more pastel

Hotel de Soubise was built for the
prince and princess de Soubise

It built 1737-1740

The Princess had a special room in
the hotel that was called “Salon de a
I’hotel Soubise

This specific room was created by
Germain Boffrand



This painting took five years to
complete because at the time, the
artist was also working on increasing
the number of private commissions

After completing it Jean-Antoine
Watteau turned it in The Royal
Academy of Painting and Sculpture
in 1717

The painting remained in the
Academy until it was moved to the
Muséum Central des Arts de la
République

In 1793, it was switched to the the
Musée du Louvre
