The program for Elementary Italian II comprises chapters 5 through 8 of the textbook, and the related chapters in the Workbook/Lab/Video manual (via WEBSAM). The course will build on your existing skills in Italian, increase your confidence and your ability to read, write, speak and understand the language, and introduce you to more refined lexical items, more complex grammatical structures, and more challenging cultural material addressing health and wellness, slow food, and the environment. Readings include short literary texts and passages from the textbook. Study guides, glossaries, and visuals will facilitate comprehension while students sharpen their practical Italian language skills in lively discussions that will enhance understanding Italian society. The course is meant to be a window to Italian culture whose goal is class discussion, making regular attendance absolutely essential. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this course is to continue to provide a foundational knowledge of Italian that enables students to communicate and interact comfortably in certain Italian settings and to develop the analytical tools to compare and contrast Italian culture with students’ own culture. COURSE METHODOLOGY: This course focuses on a content-based language curriculum, through the communicative or natural approach. The class will be conducted in Italian. This course is not a teacher-centered lecture but rather one in which student participation is a must. This is not a class about Italian, but a class in Italian. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Assigned WEBSAM exercises (4) Pop quizzes (10) Tests (4) Compositions (2) GRADING POLICY: Activity WEBSAM Activities (4) Pop Quizzes (10) Unità Tests (4) Compositions (2) Video Responses (2) Oral Interviews (2) Attendance/Participation Final Exam Final Grade A 90-100 points B 80-89 points C 70-79 points Video Responses (2) Oral Interviews (2) Attendance and Participation Final Exam Points Each 4 @ 3 pts. ea. 10 @ 1 pts. ea. 4 @ 6 pts. ea. 2 @ 5 pts. ea. 2 @ 5 pts. ea. 2 @ 6 pts. ea. 10 pts. 12 pts. % of Final Grade 12 10 24 10 10 12 10 12 D F 60-69 points 59 or fewer points ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory for this class and points will be deducted from the Attendance/Participation grade for each unexcused absence. Roll will be taken at the beginning of class. If a student comes to class more than 20 minutes late or leaves early, then he/she will be counted absent for the day. Documented excuses (as defined in the Tiger Cub) for missing class must be presented immediately upon a student’s return to class (after one week, instructor will no longer accept documentation and the absence will not be excused). Instructor accepts only official university excuses (as defined by the Tiger Cub). Proper original documentation is required - copies are not accepted. The documentation must be signed by the person providing it and have a telephone number where instructor can reach that person to check the excuse. The excuse must state that the student was unable to attend classes for illness or other approved reason as defined by the Tiger Cub (a simple in/out notification from the Medical Center will not suffice). Fraudulent excuses will be reported as a violation of Academic Honesty. After 5 unexcused absences your final grade for the course will be an FA (failure due to absences) regardless of your graded work. Attendance Grades will be assigned using the following rubric (100 points total): – 10 pts. one mandatory Italian Club event – 90 pts. possible for participation, determined by: volunteering to answer questions, staying on task and paying attention (not working on other assignments or using cell phone or other devices) – Additional Italian Club event may replace unexcused absences 2 HOMEWORK: 4 WEBSAM ACTIVITIES (online). No late homework accepted. Websam activities are always due by 11:59 p.m. of the DAY before your test (See detailed schedule). COMPOSITIONS: one for Unità 5 and one for Unità 7. Topics to be announced in class. For both compositions, students will turn in the first draft to be corrected by the instructor, re-write a final copy based on the instructor’s comments, and re-submit a final copy stapled to the first draft (grade is an average of both versions). If the student does not submit the second draft, he/she will receive the grade of the first draft. NO LATE SUBMISSION! *Please note: Students who demonstrate use of online translators will be reported for academic dishonesty. Limit yourself to looking up individual words (in a dictionary or on wordreference.com) and NOT entire sentences or verb conjugations. VIDEO RESPONSES: one for Unità 6 and one for Unità 8. Step 1: Each student will watch a short video posted on Canvas and respond to comprehension questions by recording the answers on a voiceboard. Step 2: In groups of three, students will then record a skit -based on the situation viewed- by using the video device on Canvas. If you experience any technical issues on your personal computer with this assignment, try completing it in the Language Lab in 3234 Haley. Arrangements for make-up assignments must be made in advance unless due to emergency, and will be subject to the policies as outlined in the AU Bulletin and this syllabus. No make-up work will be accepted for unexcused absences and within a week. TESTS There will be 4 tests, one for each chapter (unità). The tests will include vocabulary, grammar, culture, writing, reading or listening. A missed test may be made up ONLY in the case of illness, family emergency, or an official university excuse (see Tiger Cub). In the case of illness and family emergencies, the instructor must be personally notified by the student as soon as possible. A written medical excuse by the attending physician is appropriate in case of illness. All make-ups will take place only at the time designated by the instructor in her office. POP QUIZZES There will be ten unannounced quizzes that will test students’ comprehension of the reading material assigned for that day. If you read the material, you will have no problem completing the pop quiz. If a student is absent or arrives late, they will not receive a ZERO for that quiz. There are no make-ups for pop quizzes. Students may attend up to two additional Italian Club events (besides the mandatory one) to receive a 100% grade for up to two pop quizzes. ORAL INTERVIEWS There will be two oral interviews for this course, one near the middle of the semester and one at the end. Topics and further details are to be announced in class. FINAL EXAM The final exam is cumulative, covering all four chapters in the course and their respective skills: vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading, writing, and culture. The time and date of the final exam are determined by the university and cannot be changed. 3 CLASS PARTICIPATION POLICIES: Students are expected to come to class ON TIME, with all the necessary materials and having read the assigned grammatical, cultural and vocabulary notes as assigned. Students will speak or attempt to speak in Italian at all times. Questions at the end of the class meetings and during office hours CAN be asked in English (and will be answered in English). Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. The goal of Auburn University and its faculty and students is to foster a dynamic environment of higher learning where all students develop analytical skills, learn to think critically and communicate effectively, promote inquiry, pursue knowledge, and prepare for productive careers. Behavior in the classroom that impedes teaching and learning and creates obstacles to this goal is considered disruptive and therefore subject to sanctions. Examples of improper behavior in the classroom may include, but are not limited to, the following: • repeatedly arriving after a class has begun • use of tobacco products • distractive talking, including cell phone usage (text messaging) • refusal to comply with reasonable instructor directions • employing insulting language or gestures • verbal, psychological, or physical threats, harassment, and physical violence (par 3 Faculty Handbook) The AU Classroom Behavior Policy is strictly followed in this course; please refer to the Student Policy eHandbook at http://www.auburn.edu/student_info/student_policies/ for details of this policy. SPECIAL ACCOMMODATION: Students who need accommodations are asked to electronically submit their approved accommodations through AU Access and to make an individual appointment with the instructor during the first week of classes – or as soon as possible if accommodations are needed immediately. If you have not established accommodations through the Office of Accessibility, but need accommodations, make an appointment with the Office of Accessibility, 1228 Haley Center, 844-2096 (V/TT). ACADEMIC HONESTY: Auburn University expects students to pursue their academic work with honesty and integrity. All portions of the Auburn University Student Academic Honesty code (Title XII) found in the Student Policy eHandbook at http://www.auburn.edu/student_info/student_policies/ will apply to this class. All academic honesty violations or alleged violations of the SGA Code of Laws will be reported to the Office of the Provost, which will then refer the case to the Academic Honesty Committee. EARLY ALERT GRADE You will receive an Early Alert Grade one week prior to mid semester (31st class day). The Early Alert Grade represents your current performance on class work graded at that point in the semester. Check the grading scale for this course so that you are aware of what percentage of the total points is represented by your Early Alert Grade. If your Early Alert Grade is a "D", "F", or "FA" you will receive an email from the Retention Coordinator. Early Alert Grades can be viewed by logging into AU Access and opening the tiger tab. Select "Student Records" and open the "Midterm Grades" window from the drop down box. If the grade seems inaccurate, please contact the instructor. 4 EMERGENCY POLICY: If normal class and/or lab activities are disrupted due to illness, emergency, or crisis situation (such as an H1N1 flu outbreak), the syllabus and other course plans and assignments may be modified to allow completion of the course. If this occurs, an addendum to your syllabus and/or course assignments will replace the original materials. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Film screenings and cultural events are provided during the term by the Italian Department and the Club Italiano as supplementary learning tools. Attendance at ONE event is mandatory and factored into the attendance/participation grade. If you are interested in studying in Taormina, Italy, please contact Dr. Rosetta Caponetto, e-mail address: rgc0006@auburn.edu.
