Part 2: Storage Plan
You’re going to be handling a lot of data, so you’ll need to plan for how you’re going to store,
access, secure, and archive your work. Newegg is recommended for expansion devices like
external hard disk drives ( http://www.newegg.com )—browse by category, use filters to narrow
your choices, then sort by Best Rating. Use these values for your estimates:
Video (average of 50 Mbps): 360 MB/min or 22 GB/hr
1. Estimate how much data one average project will take. Consider the number and
duration of audio tracks or video takes in your raw material and the number and
size of final drafts:
I will be filming a documentary of people’s accounts of the 9/11 attack to be converted
into a short film. I will be filming for 8 hours a day for 2 days making my total data 352
GB total.
2. Imagine the largest number of projects you might need to keep active at once, and
multiply your last answer by this number. Use this value to influence your selection
of hard disk size in Part 1, rounding up by a healthy margin. You might decide to
use external storage devices instead of relying on built-in in storage. In that case,
include these devices in your Equipment List, and be sure to use devices that use a
high bit rate connector format.
Since the Mac has a four terabit hard drive, this film project would have ample storage space;
not requiring an external hard drive.
3. Day to day backup: Briefly describe a plan to protect your work from catastrophe
each day. Add the cost of additional hardware or services to your Equipment List.
For data backup I purchased two media storage units that combined can accommodate all
of the footage. They are compatible with the card type and with the Mac operating
system.
4. Archiving: Briefly describe a plan to remove finished projects from your computer
hard disk and store them securely so you can retrieve them when needed. Estimate
the number of projects you imagine completing in a year on average, and use your
estimated project size to determine how long you can go before having to buy a new
storage device or upgrade your service. Add the cost of additional hardware or
services to your Equipment List. Options include:
Since my computer has a four terabit storage capacity on its hard drive and the final edited
project would be only 44 GB maximum (for a 2 hour film, which would be the longest option) I
could leave the files on the computer. However I would as put the final project both on my
already purchased media storage units and possible on a website or DVD if it gets passed the Sun
Dance Film festival.
