Kristen Woznick Solar Water Pump Engr 408 October 1, 2012 Multiple tests can analyze different answer to both situational and subjective questions. These tests include the Keirsey Personality assessment, Jung Typology test, the Big Five Personality Test and the Emotional/ Intelligence Test. Once completing the Keirsey Personality assessment, I embody the skills of a guardian protector with acronym ISFJ. I am included in the 40 to 45 percent of the population that exhibit these same skills as a guardian. As a guardian, I am supposed to be seen as a parent figure running a smooth household or a sailor allowing a ship to embark on a safe and flawless journey. Simply, guardians have an adequate balance of both “work” and “play.” These individuals are reliable and accountable when push comes to shove. In being reliable, truth and justice are key feature knowing right and wrong. In the minority, I am considered a member of the 10 percent of the population who are protectors. In agreement with this description, I am adequately perceived as a guardian protector. For example, as a young toddler, I developed this behavior once my twin brother and sister were born. This photograph is sufficient proof to establish a solid claim. In the home videos, I acted like I was a second mother to them such as running to fetch their bottles, checking the temperature, picking out their clothes, etc. These characteristics have carried over into my adult stages. I have developed my own support network, my core group of friends; however, I am always true to my family. My brother and sister have completed there first few weeks of college, and I still worry. I talk to them nightly to say goodnight and to see if they have any questions regarding their schoolwork or social life. Simply, I want to keep things running smoothly in my family even if that means completing crucial jobs that are necessary for success that are taken for granted. Often, the three-word phrase “I love you” is often forgotten or skipped over in conversation or simply not said enough. These three words are supportive in the family atmosphere and simply just put a smile on one of our faces. “Pride, Loyalty, and Tradition” Three word phrases are common in my personality. Pride, loyalty, and tradition are the theme of not only my once attended high school, Bishop McCort Catholic High School, but also of my personality. In another aspect, I believe that doing the right thing is inevitable and only acceptable. This is seen in my everyday life such as finding a purse in the parking lot after a football game and contacting the owner by searching for an identifiable resource. I am a Penn State engineering student and in accordance with the Penn State Alma Mater: “May no act of ours bring shame…” Rather, I could have left this personal item sitting on the side of the road or even looked for valuable possessions to keep for myself, but this was not justified in my mind. This is all part of the protection of others. Leadership responsibility is seen in a guardian protector. I currently possess leadership skills in my personality. With this personality type, I truly care about the employees and have their best interest in mind as well as being loyal to the company in their established traditions. As a protector, I find joy in helping and assisting others. In this workhorse aspect, I am diligent and able to handle multiple tasks at one moment in time. As a result, I am not too egotistical to come down to the worker bees’ levels. This is done in a subtle manner indicating that I am quieter than others. However, in opposition, trouble could be exhibited due to protecting employees from the dangers of society. Instead, employees appreciate the truth and would rather know what was going on instead of hearing the sugar coated facts. As a protector, I do not comfortably handle constantly changing atmospheres. However, leadership involves efficiently adapting to changes. Leading by example is a key component for employees to learn the ropes; therefore, this point is characterized as a learning point for me in society. By being an example, I may take too much work under my wing to be completed by a single person. Where in realization, I should allow others to grace their knowledge upon me allowing twice as much work to be accomplished benefiting both the company and ourselves. Due to taking a shy approach, employees may think that a guardian protector as stiff or uneasy and unapproachable, yet in reality I am disguised as warm-hearted and sympathetic. Since I am diagnosed with the personality, I sometimes gratefully become upset at receiving no respect or gratitude that I deserve in my enduring work. Nonetheless, as seen through personal experience, room for improvement is understandable and accepted. This personality type, guardian, can interact with the other three general personality types, idealists, artisans, and rationals, both positively and negatively. Guardians Artisans Idealists Rationals Guardians obey the rules and make justice a key priority while they handle their own duties and responsibilities. First, by interacting with idealist, similar ethical approaches are taken while searching for innovative ideals while still handling the duties and responsibilities that leadership positions retain. Second, by interacting with artisans, more will be accomplished in a less amount of time, yet conflict will arise in the approach to finding solutions. Artisans are simply in the venture for the payoff in the end, no matter the risk or number of rules broken; however, the guardian or myself wholeheartedly believes in the company and the ethics that follow but both will agree on looking at what was given and evaluate a solution from these materials. These individuals need to ask themselves, “Is trust, honesty, and loyalty to the company important in job responsibility, and how will this decision affect the reputation of the company and yourself?” Finally, guardians need to interact with rationals. Rationals will guardian to explore unknown opportunities allowing room for advancement and invention, but again, ethical issues will arise. Therefore, in order to work as a group, rationals will develop innovative questions allowing idealists to positively allow an outlet for innovation but while keeping the guardian’s just manner in mind by following the appropriate code of ethics. In leadership positions, there is simply not an endless amount of time to make decisions; therefore, artisans will bring speed to decisions and quick thinking by using what is given and contemplated by the other diverse members of the group. The guardian will keep the duties and responsibilities of the company in the forefront when deciding on the final decision and allowing this process to run as smoothly as possible. 67% judging 33% Extravert 25% Sensing 1% Thinking To gain comparable results, I have taken the Jung Typology Test. I am classified as ESTJ. I am 33% extravert, 25% sensing, 1% thinking, and 67% judging. I am moderately preferred as an extravert. However, this contradicts my previous classification as an introvert. An introvert is more reserved in nature. According to Adam S. McHugh, “Introverts treasure the close relationships they have stretched so much to make.” Indicating that introverts spend less time with immense groups of people and spend more time developing closer relationships with the few true friends. Whereas extroverts are the talkative, outgoing, and social butterflies so to speak. No fear is felt when displaying leadership principles in front of a larger gathering. Simply, an extrovert rarely wants to be in solitude. In analyzing myself, I am more of an introvert when you would ask friends and family. Second, the Jung Typology Test and Keirsey Test agree with each other. Sensing allows me to think in a practical and in a reasonable, sound manner while understanding others through intellectual interpretation. Yes, I do believe these two tests were spot on in their analysis of my personality as I am more sensible rather than intuitive. I explore all reasonable possibilities before deciding on a final decision that could possibly take some time in most decisions. On another level opposition occurs between the two tests. I am considered with no margin 1% thinking in this test whereas previously I am more of the feeling type. This is a small difference indicating that I base decisions on feeling. In research and comparing presidents, President Bill Clinton was more focused on thinking, and President Reagan based his campaign on feeling. In comparison to President Reagan, feeling is portrayed in a subjective basis that allows me to only believe in supportive facts. Last but not least, I am considered judging in both cases with the Jung Typology Test showing that I am 67% judging. In describing my judgmental personality, I am organized, structured, and responsible as well as decisive. Humorously, this is seen through my excessive use of post-it notes and two academic planners. In moving on to the Big Five Personality Test, the OCEAN model of personality is used describing five dimensions. After taking this test, I learned that I am both well organized and reliable, but I am neither particularly social nor reserved. All in all, I am good natured, courteous, supportive, and generally relaxed. In a broad retrospect, these results are generally in agreement with the Keirsey assessment. In particular the Big Fiver Personality Test offered more insight to myself as it states that I am generally relaxed in situations. This is a new side to my personality as it has only been found upon recently within the past year. With experience, I have come to learn that freaking out does harm to the leader, group, and individuals. Patience is a key virtue that is learned from failure and a calm sense of mind as the years pass. I have learned what type of personality I have developed through the 20 years that I have been influence my media, family, and friends; therefore, I need to learn where room is available for improvement and advancement. By taking the Emotional Intelligence Test and scoring a 69 out of the possible 100 points, I am adequately capable of exploring my inner emotions and analyzing these feelings but as in everyone, there is always more room for exploration as I gain more experience and knowledge through my core-learning environment at Penn State. By knowing myself, I am capable of reading others and knowing how they feel in diverse situations allowing me to relate to the emotions that others feel by recognizing my own. To explore further into myself, I can develop a habit of journaling each night before I go to bed. Meals Song lyrics Dailiy activities or thoughts Journal topics could include simply the meals I ate for the day, how I spend my time during the day, or a few thoughts that popped into my head during the day including song lyrics. In the end, I will never truly know myself but further insight will be resourceful in learning about others’ feelings and emotions. Through knowing myself, I can decide whether I am a fox or a hedgehog. “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.” In explaining this concept, foxes rely on multiple experiences therefore summarizing into multiple ideas that expand a variety of topics. On the other hand, hedgehogs are singleminded and focus on a single issue at hand and refine all points to surround this single aspect. All in all, I am a fox that knows many things. I cannot concentrate on a single topic or assignment. Rather than focus on one assignment at school, I alternate between classes to develop a sense of calmness and sureness. This allows me to release frustration of struggling over a problem if this would to occur. Sometimes a breath of fresh air is all that is needed to develop a successful plan of action. I believe a hedgehog would simply beat their head against the desk. Defining a few core values is quite difficult in skimming through random lists. However, the few I have chosen to define are essential to leadership qualities. First and foremost, integrity is defined in my mind as saying what I do and doing what I say. Nonetheless, my words and actions are based on ethical principles and moral standards. As a leader, if I did not believe in integrity, loyalty and trust that my group members have placed in me will be lost. Besides Integrity, I focus my personal behavior on stewardship. From the time I was young until the present, I am quite obsessive in responsibility, planning, and managing. As a child, I would organize the J.C. Penny catalog that would come in the mail by placing tabs in between the categorized sections such as Men’s, Women’s, Shoes, Outerwear, etc. Through limitless possibilities, I would create my own online store with my siblings and be the manager of the orders. In addition, I would play “school.” I would always volunteer to be the teacher in order to take the initiative to create arts and crafts, worksheets, and tests. Allowing me now to become a mentor to others, I create study guides, flashcards, and worksheets for other undergraduate students currently in Chem 110 allowing my leadership skills to blossom and to be to practice in the academic setting. Third, I possess humility. Truly, I am grateful for all that I have. My parents have raised me under a financially stable environment allowing me to have nice things throughout my life. I am able to attend Penn State and major in Chemical Engineering. More importantly, I feel loved and cared for resulting in a feeling of loneliness when I am away at college. Part of this relationship is based on respect allowing realization that there is worth in life in a non-egotistical manner. I direct attention away from myself and give credit to those who deserve praise. In the end, I strive to be like the co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, David Packard who states, “You shouldn’t gloat about anything you’ve done; you ought to keep going and find something better to do.” Passionately, I am involved in many activities. Anything that I commit to at school, I emit passion. For instance, I have just become an Engineering Career Envoy for the College of Engineering. This requires numerous hours a week outside of the already accumulating homework and class time. If I were not passionate about this wonderful opportunity, I would not waste my free time. I will be spreading the word about the advantages of having real world work experience prior to graduation as well as address the fears of going on a co-op rotational program. In addition, I am able to offer input into new technology and public relation ideas. Already, I have submitted ideas to establish a blogging website that will allow those currently on co-op or internship experience to answer questions and offer advice first hand. As mentioned previously, I am passionate about academics, family, friends, and those less fortunate all aiding a newfound passion towards leadership principles. Now that I have defined my core values and my passions in life, I can use these to develop the overlapping circles of the hedgehog theory (even though I am a fox). What are you deeply passionate about? What can/ cannot you be the best in the world at? What drives your economic engine? I have to admit that I have never thought about these concepts before being assigned this assignment. By defining what I am passionate about, I can see how I succeed in achieving these goals due to my passions usually being something that I am respectable at; therefore, I want to be the best in the world at achieving my passionate tasks. However, I am nowhere near perfect and therefore I cannot be the best in the world at multiple things that I am passionate at. For instance, I may not be the best waitress in the restaurant, but I enjoy working with others and offering my service. However, besides enjoyment my economic engine is driven to make money in order to better myself trough service. This full circle allows me to also make money at those passions that I am the bet in the world at. In driving my economic engine, I am more interested in the success and happiness of the company rather than the numbers, but the bigger the numbers, the larger the smiles. This would allow me to look at the profit per customer, profit per product or service, and profit per employee. This allows my mind to explore more ways to innovate entrepreneurial solutions in order to drive my economic engine. Simply, I want to earn money by enjoying my profession, exercising my mind, and displaying leadership capabilities. In the end, no matter my personality or emotional stability, room for growth is always allowed indicating that no on is perfect and these characteristics are learned and developed through the stages of life rather than being born with them naturally. In the end, I am happy as a person and with the life I have lived.
