Life Is Not Always What It Seems Abraham Lincoln – 16th President of the United States • Born in 1809 to extremely poor parents. • At age 7, they were kicked out of their house. • At age 9, his mother died. • 1831 he attempted his own business and failed miserably. • 1832 he ran for state legislature and lost. • 1832 Applied to law school, but was unqualified. • 1833 He tried another business and failed. • 1835 He fell in love and was engaged to Ann Rutledge. She died soon after the engagement. • 1836 He had a nervous breakdown. • 1838 He was defeated in his attempt to become speaker of the state legislature. • 1840 He lost his bid for elector of the state. • 1843 He ran for Congress and lost. • 1846 He ran for Congress and won. • 1854 He ran for Senate and lost. • 1856 He sought the vote for Vice President, but received less that 100 votes. • 1858 He ran for the U.S. Senate and lost. • 1860 He was elected as President of the U.S. • 1865 He was assassinated only five days after Lee’s surrender. And yet for this reason I found mercy, in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.” • 1 Cor 15:9-10 “For I am the least of the apostles, who am not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.”
