Elizabeth’s Interpretative Write-Up
For this reading assessment I worked with a fourth grade little girl. For the
purpose of confidentiality, I will call this Sarah. Sarah was a very interesting student.
From the student interest inventory, I leaned that Sarah loves to read anything and
everything about animals. Sarah’s future goal is to become a vet. Sarah also really likes
to learn about unique facts. She loves reading the Ripley Believe It or Not books. I also
learned that Sarah does not like reading books that are of another world and are far out
there. She stated in the interview that she could not get into Harry Potter because of all
the magic and made up things.
Sarah struggled with speed and reading. As Sarah tried to use the same speed
for all of the books she was reading, she would make more and more mistakes. Sarah
would add in words, say words wrong, and leave words out. As the words got harder,
the student struggled with saying the words correctly. For example, when reading Bolt,
Sarah said minding instead of mining. Sarah did not try to correct herself, because she
was reading too fast. Even though Sarah was trying to keep the same rate while
reading, she began to slow down while reading Bolt. When reading Frog and Toad,
Sarah’s rate for words per minute was 103.45. On the second book, Sarah slowed down
to 85.71 words per minute. On the final book, Sarah’s rate went back up to 92.31.
I was very confused with Sarah’s outcome. Sarah made a 94 % in accuracy for
the first book. When we moved on to the next book, Sarah scored an 87%. She made
thirteen errors. I decided to try the next book with Sarah to make sure that this was her
frustration level of reading. When she read the next book, Sarah performed better. On
the last passage, which was third grade level, she scored 96% accuracy. She only made
four errors in this passage. I believe that Sarah performed better on the first and last
book because she was more interested in the story line. Sarah wanted to read these
books because they intrigued her. I feel that because Sarah wanted to read these
stories, then she wanted read her very best. I feel that confidante that I could put Sarah
on a 2nd grade reading level because of how well she did on her 1st grade and 3rd grade
leave assessment and her rate on all three reading assessments.
I feel that Sarah’s accuracy, rate, and comprehension were all related to one
another. When Sarah’s reading rate went down, so did her accuracy and
comprehension. When reading Bolt, Sarah could tell me what happened, but I do not
believe that she understood what she was reading. When her words per minute slowed
down, I could see it was because she was struggling with word recognition. When
Sarah’s accuracy was decreased, so was he reading rate. I can see that Sarah’s word
recognition is linked back to the initial spelling test that she took. Sarah made a 60%
on Level 1. She dropped to 20% on Level 2 and scored 30% on Level 3. Sarah struggles
with words that have ch, ea, and kn. For example, Sarah spelled knows as nowes. I
could see this was evident in her reading as well. When she was reading Bolt she read
lead dog as led dog.
After reviewing Sarah’s reading assessment, I believe that I have found her
good match. I feel that Sarah’s good match is upper first grade level books. After first
grade, Sarah is missing about five words out of one hundred. At that point, I knew that
any level higher than first grade, Sarah would struggle reading and comprehending. I
believe that if Sarah were to have read this book alone, I feel that she would have
enjoyed the book, because it was on her level. I feel the Sarah would ask for another
book that was similar to this one. I feel that Sarah’s strength is her comprehension. I
feel that even if Sarah misses several words in a book, she knows what the book was
about. For example, when reading Bolt, this was Sarah’s weakest passage; she still
knocked out the comprehension part of the assessment. Sarah understood each of the
three stories that she read. I feel that Sarah’s weakness is word recognition. Sarah has
a hard time reading words and saying them out loud. When Sarah said a word wrong
or missed a word, she did not seem to notice that she had missed pronounced the
word, Sarah would just keep reading as if nothing was wrong. For example, while
reading Bolt, Sarah says minears, instead of miners. She did not even realize she had
said the word wrong, she just kept going. For the classroom teacher, I would say that
she needs to work on increasing Sarah’s word indifcation. I feel that the teacher needs
to have vocabulary that comes out of the books that they are reading in class. The
teacher needs to tell the students what the words mean and give them examples of the
words being used in the real word. She also needs to show the students how to spell
the words. I feel that working with Sarah on her vocabulary, then Sarah would be able
to read with more easy and accuracy.
I have created a list of four books that are on a second grade level that I
feel that Sarah will love. The series Stepping into Reading by Sharon Bokoske and
Margaret Davidson. One of the books in this series is Dolphins. Another great
book for Sarah would be National Geographic for Kids Cats vs. Dogs. In one part
of the interview, Sarah talked about how cool kangaroos were. I have found a book
that is about the place where kangaroos live, Outback Adventures By Kate McLead.
I thought that Sarah would love this book. I choose this book for Sarah because she
loves animal. She said her dream was to become a vet one day. I feel that giving her
these books that are on her level about animal will make her want to read more and
more. The final book that I have chosen for Sarah is The Blue Ghost By Marion
Dane Bauer. I thought that this would be a great book for Sarah because of the
mystery and the front cover looks really cool. The front cover has a lot to do with the
books that Sarah picks to read. She said that they have to be cool covers or she won’t
read the book. Well this back has an amazing front cover that I think Sarah will go
head over hills for.
