Mrs. Preston’s 6th Grade Math Class Welcome to middle school and your 6th grade math class! I am very excited to begin a new school year with you as my student. This syllabus will help introduce you to my class and explain some of the expectations and guidelines for a successful year. Supplies You Will Need 1 inch 3-ring binder 3-ring pencil pouch with pencils and sharpener Loose leaf paper TI-30XIIS calculator (optional) Units of Study 1. Number Systems 2. Ratios and Proportional Relationships 3. Integers and Rational Numbers 4. Expressions and Equations 5. Geometry 6. Statistics Learning Targets and Quizzes Learning targets describe what the students will learn and be able to do. It is important for students and parents to understand what is being taught and what learning outcomes the student should have. Therefore, the learning targets must be clearly communicated to the students and parents. At the beginning of a unit, the students will receive a copy of the unit learning targets which are to be kept in the math binder. Additionally, the learning targets will be posted and discussed daily in the classroom. Lastly, as a communication tool to the parents, the students will be required to copy down the learning target in the “notes” section of the agenda book each week. As a parent, it is important for you to read these targets and ask your child how he or she is accomplishing this goal in class. Quizzes will be given in class on a weekly basis to check for student learning. These quizzes will provide information about how well the student is performing in regard to the learning targets. They will be counted for a formative grade every week. Grading Policy Your grade will be determined based on the percentage of points you earn in two categories. The first category is formative assessments, worth 30% of the final grade and the second category is summative assessments, worth 70% of the final grade. Formative assessments include classwork, homework, quizzes, and participation. Summative assessments only include tests. Tests will be given at the end of a unit and have extremely large weight on your grade. Additionally, retaking tests will not be allowed. Your letter grade at the end of the grading period is based on the following guidelines: A 92- 100 B 83-91 C 74- 83 D 65-73 F below 65 Homework Policy Homework will only be assigned when necessary and beneficial. It will be appropriate in length and should not take more than 30 minutes to complete. It is due the day after it is assigned unless the teacher extends the due date and it is to be placed on the desk immediately when entering class to be checked by the teacher. If you fail to complete the assignment, you will receive a Missing Assignment Stamp in the agenda book and you will be given a Pink Slip. Once a student accumulates 3 Pink Slips, he or she will be assigned after-school detention. Also, you will make a phone-call home, explain that you haven’t been doing your work, and make detention arrangements. Homework will make up 100 points in the formative category. Each time an assignment is not completed, 5 points will be deducted. Makeup Work/Late Work Policy When you must be absent from school, you are required to make up all your work that you have missed in your classes regardless if it is an excused or unexcused absence. It is your job to come and ask your teacher for all missed assignments. Do not expect the teacher to remember that you have been absent and to come chase you down with your work. If work is turned in late, it will only be accepted for partial credit at the teacher’s discretion. No late work will be accepted after a 9-week grading period ends. Reward System Students will have opportunities to earn rewards for completing work and for exceptional behavior. Stamps will be rewarded on the back of the agenda book. Students may “spend” their stamps immediately or they can save up their stamps for greater rewards. The following is a list of rewards and the amount of stamps required for each. 1 stamp = 1 piece of candy 5 stamps = 1 pencil or pen 10 stamps = lunch with a friend in the classroom 20 stamps = get out of homework free pass 40 stamps = can of soda 75 stamps = free fast food lunch of your choice 6th-Grade Pre-Algebra Only students who have qualified for the Pre-Algebra class will be admitted. In order to qualify, students must have exceptionally high math placement test scores. Pre-Algebra is a high level math class and you will be expected to think quickly on a high level as you will be covering both 6th grade math standards and Pre-Algebra standards. If you are not able to keep up with the pace of the class and your grades begin to fall, you will be placed in a regular math class. Student Responsibilities As a middle school student, you must take on more responsibility for your education than you did in elementary school. First, you have to take responsibility for your own learning. If you are not learning the material, do not blame someone else. You must listen, pay attention in class, and seek help from a teacher, a friend, or your parents if you do not understand the material. Second, it is your responsibility to come to class prepared to learn. This means you need to bring your math binder, homework, and a pencil with you every day. Do not expect your teacher to give you materials. Lastly, you are responsible for completing all of your work. If you are unsure of your grades or if you have missing work, you can log in to Infinite Campus or ask your teacher how you are doing before or after class.
