YEAR 11 INTO 12 SUMMER TRANSITION TASKS
Subject: Sport and Physical Education
Qualification/Level: AS Physical Education
Examination Board: Edexcel
The following tasks are to be completed over the summer and brought to your first lesson.
The Task
Part 1:
You need to produce a minimum 800 word essay on the following question:
- Explain the current health trends between the UK and Japan whilst justifying the
difference between these countries.
Part 2:
To develop your understanding you will need to research each topic area and come up with
a clear definitions/content document to ensure you understand each section of the
syllabus:
Components of physical fitness: Components of skill fitness: Co-ordination, balance,
agility, reaction time, power, strength, flexibility, endurance (local muscle, cardiovascular,
strength)
Methods of fitness training: Aerobic/anaerobic training, continuous, interval, power,
circuit/weight/resistance training, speed, fartlek, cross training, core stability, plyometrics,
SAQ (speed, agility, quickness), stretching (static, ballistic, dynamic, proprioceptive
neuromuscular facilitation- PNF).
Principles of Training: FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type)
Effects of Exercise: Adaptations, Responses
UK Agencies: Sport England, Youth Sports Trust, UK Sport.
21st Century: Globalisation of sport, Americanisation, ‘Hamburger Olympics’,
Commercialisation
Deviance in Sport: Sportsmanship, gamesmanship, performance-enhancing drugs, role of
WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency)
Reformative Policies: Women’s sports foundation, Kick It Out, County Sports Partnerships,
Sport for All
Part 3:
To ensure you have sufficient knowledge required for success in A Level PE you must be
knowledgeable as to what is going on in the sporting world. With this in mind read, collate
and keep up-to-date with the websites for these organisations:
- UK Sport
- Youth Sports Trust
- Sport England
- BBC Sports News
- Sky Sports News
How the work produced will fit into subsequent work and the specification as a whole
The task compliments year 1; students will find that a thorough completion of these
summer tasks will put them into a strong position at the start of the year.
How the work should be presented
Work should always be produced using electronic methods and students should always
make every endeavour to ensure that all work is presented to the highest of quality.
Literacy will also be assessed so students should ensure work is spell checked and grammar
checked prior to handing in.

This work will be assessed by GMA and THU combined

read the papers etc.

What equipment will be needed for the subject?
For September you must bring with you an A4 file/folder with a set of subject dividers and
paper inside – this is essential for the first lesson
