Welcome to your Internship!
COURSE PREREQUISITE: GEOG 4405 or permission from GIS Director
COURSE DESCRIPTION: A structured off-campus experience in a supervised setting that is
related to the student’s major and career interests. Practical experience is combined with
scholarly research under the guidance of geography faculty and the internship supervisor.
Those seeking experience in a GIS environment will work under the guidance of the GIS
Program Director.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Experience GIS/geospatial technologies in a professional setting
outside the classroom; 2. Gain knowledge of GIS/geospatial technologies in an
internship/work environment; 3. Use skills learned in the classroom and apply them in the
internship/work environment.
COURSE COMPONENTS: You will complete 50 hrs per credit hour you are enrolled. Not
completing all hours results in a zero. At the end of the internship, you will write a term paper
covering various aspects of the internship. Upload this paper to Georgia View Vista. Term
paper requirements: A template has been provided for you on GVV. The term paper needs to
be a minimum of 10 pages (and an additional 5 pages for every additional 3 credit hours),
double spaced, Cambria or Times New Roman 12 font, normal margins describing (at
minimum):
1. Where you worked [can include company history with GIS, no more than a paragraph]
2. How you found your position [no more than a paragraph]
3. What you did/projects worked on during your internship [GIS/RS/geospatial
techniques]
4. What previously learned skills you used [GIS/RS/geospatial techniques]
5. What skills you learned [GIS/RS/geospatial techniques]
6. What you wish you learned/knew before you took the internship [i.e. at KSU/in
classroom]
7. Your overall experience with the internship
8. Where you see yourself in the next 1-10 years/”perfect” job [no more than 1
paragraph]
If you don’t follow this format above, I will deduct a minimum of one letter grade from you final
grade.

In addition to the term paper, your supervisor will fill out an evaluation form. These are due
by the last day of class unless previous arrangements have been made with your professor
[me].

PLEASE NOTE: According to Georgia law (Labor Codes) and the laws and labor codes of most
US states, a practicum, internship or co-op is NOT deemed employment in terms of your ability
to claim unemployment. Unless the exceptions are applicable, do not file unemployment with
your internship or co-op.
Exceptions: You have a position that you have been working at as an employee (not an intern)
previous to the internship credits/hours, or work in a state in which internships or co-ops
have all the rights as standard employment.
After you have read this syllabus, send Dr. Hoalst-Pullen an email via Georgia View Vista that
states “I have read and agree to the GIS 3398 syllabus.” DUE September 23 or receive a letter
grade deduction.
