Registration Tutorial (2014)
for the School of Business Administration
Steps to Register for Your First
Semester
1.
Complete this tutorial! It is designed to ensure that you successfully complete
enrollment in fall courses.
2.
Take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment. (The only exception will be for students
who, at the present time, have already earned college credit for Calculus.)
3.
Review the School of Business First-Semester Freshman Course Selection webpages for
more detailed information about appropriate first-semester courses for Business
students.
4.
Submit your course selection information online through the New School of Business
Freshman Online Course Selection Form.
5.
An academic advisor will review your submission and reply by email with specific course
approvals.
6.
Access CANELINK and register for the classes that were pre-approved.
7.
The deadline to complete your registration for courses is June 15!
BBA vs. BSBA: What is the Difference?
BBA
• Students take Quantitative Applications in
Business (MAS 110) or Calculus 1 (MTH 161)
and two statistics courses (MAS 201 and
202).
• To graduate with Honors in the Bachelor of
Business Administration (BBA), students
must pursue Departmental Honors.
Graduation requirements include an honors
thesis and the minimum GPA of 3.9.
BSBA
•Students take two levels of pure calculus
(MTH 161 and 162) and two higher level
statistics courses (MAS 311 and 312).
•An “Introduction to Programming” course
and a higher level quantitative course are
also required in the Professional Core.
•To graduate with General Business Honors,
students must complete the Bachelor of
Science in Business Administration (BSBA)
with a minimum GPA of 3.75.
Which courses are typical for a firstsemester freshman in Business?
A typical full-time academic schedule for a new Business School freshman would include 5 courses (15-17 credits):
1. BUS 101
• Required of all full-time academic Business students
2. ENG 105
• Unless you have credit from AP/IB, dual enrollment, or a minimum SAT Reading score of 700 or a minimum ACT English
score of 32
3. MATH
• An appropriate level math course determined by your choice of degree, an ACT/SAT math score, the ALEKS Math
Placement Assessment score, and/or previous college credit in a math course
4. BUSINESS FOUNDATION COURSE
• BSL 212, CIS 150, ECO 211, ECO 212, MKT 201
5. CHOICE COURSE
• One additional course of your choice (can be business or general education, based on your interests, academic
background, and transcript)
(If you are a Foote Fellow or if you intend to follow a pre-health track, and/or if you have college credits for English Composition and Calculus, your
schedule will be slightly different.)
What do I do about AP/IB/CLEP Exams
or Dual Enrollment/Transfer Courses?
AP/IB (HL) or CLEP exams:
•
If you do not know the results of AP/IB (HL) and CLEP exams at this time, you will need to
make a judgment about the potential for receiving credits.
•
You may check the AP/IB (HL) score tables online in order to determine the exam scores
necessary for the awarding of University of Miami credit for specific courses.
Dual Enrollment/Transfer credits:
•
If you took a course for college credit, you must submit official transcripts to the UM Office of
Admission from the issuing College or University.
•
A listing on the high school transcript is not sufficient to award college credit. A minimum
grade of "C" is required for consideration of credit in all dual enrollment and transfer courses.
Evaluation of AP/IB (HL) Scores for UM
Credits
•
AP/IB (HL) scores: You must request that your scores be sent directly to the UM Office
of Admission from the College Board or from your regional IB office.
•
CLEP scores: You must submit an Official Test Result Report to the UM Office of
Admission.
DEADLINE: No credit will be awarded for AP/IB courses after December 15, 2014.

Dual Enrollment and Transfer Credits
Dual Enrollment/Transfer credits:
•
If you took a course for college credit, you must submit official transcripts to the UM Office of
Admission from the issuing College or University.
•
A listing on the high school transcript is not sufficient to award college credit. A minimum grade
of "C" is required for consideration of credit in all dual enrollment and transfer courses.
DEADLINE: All grades earned in these courses are part of your permanent record and should
be submitted to UM no later than December 15, 2014.

General Education Areas of Knowledge:
What is a Cognate?
The "Areas of Knowledge" aspect of the university's general education requirements is based on
the notion of cognates.
•
A cognate is a group of at least three related courses for at least 9 credits. The courses in a
cognate are related in a topical, thematic, interdisciplinary, sequential, or other such fashion, so
that completion of a cognate provides coherent depth of knowledge in the area. Students must
take three cognates:
Arts & Humanities (A&H)
• People & Society (P&S)
• Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)
•

As a first semester freshman, we recommend you choose a course in the “Arts and Humanities
cognate.”

Can I meet with or speak to an advisor
to discuss my course selection?
•
In order to properly enroll in courses, you must fill out the New School of Business
Freshman Online Course Selection Form.
•
Once the form is submitted, a School of Business Academic Advisor will:
Review your course selection
• Respond with your first semester courses
• Release your “Academic Advising Hold”
•
You will then be able to enroll for your first semester courses!
