Essential 3) Then use right-arrow button on yourmixtures keyboard to Students willthecompare and contrast and advance through this presentation. compounds. Essential Question(s) How can I recognize the differences and similarities between mixtures and a compounds? Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science What is a Mixture? When you combine two or more substances together, if no chemical reaction occurs, then it is called a mixture. Any changes you observe in a mixture are only physical changes… no new substances are formed. Mixtures can be fairly easily separated back into their parts Air Steel Salt Water Blood Milk Mixture Examples: What is a Compound? …consists of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded in a chemical reaction to form a new substance. Compounds CAN NOT be easily separated back into their parts Compound Examples: H2O NaCl CO2 C6H12O6 Notes EXAMPLE: A Mixture SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Air 7 8 18 N O Ar Nitrogen Oxygen Argon 14.0 16.0 39.9 Composition of Air: 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% Argon and other gases When these ingredients are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture Steel Science 26 6 Fe Steel Ingredients: Iron C 98.5% Iron (Fe) and 1.5% Carbon (C) Carbon 55.8 No chemical reaction occurs when these ingredients are mixed together 12.0 Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture Salt Water Atlantic Ocean Salt Water Science Pacific Ocean Seawater Ingredients: 3.5 % dissolved salts (mostly NaCl) and 96.5%Water (H2O) When these ingredients are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: AMixture Blood Science Blood Ingredients: 55% Plasma (consists of 90% water, 8% Protein, 2% other) 45% Red/White blood cells and Platelets When these ingredients are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLES: A Mixture Milk Science Milk Ingredients: 88% Water, 5% Carbohydrates, 3% Fat, 3% Protein, 1% Minerals When these ingredients are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Notes Science MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures Cement Soup Salad Soup Salad Cement No chemical reaction occurred when these mixtures were formed Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds MORE EXAMPLES Mixtures Tea Science Energy Drinks Soft Drinks Kool-Aid Drinks Kool-Aid Tea No chemical reaction occurred when these mixtures were formed SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Notes Science MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures Hamburgers Hamburgers Tacos Pizza Tacos No chemical reaction occurred when these mixtures were formed Pizza Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science NOTE: A mixture may contain one or more compounds, as long as they do not react with each other (like Kool-Aid for example) Kool-Aid drink is a mixture Kool-Aid Ingredients: Water, sugar, flavoring agent, and a coloring agent Kool-Aid contains two compounds: (A) water (H2O) & (B) sugar/sucrose (C12H22O11) along with other items. ___________________ Yet these ingredients DO NOT chemically react with each other. Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science How do I know if something is a mixture or not? Two Ways 1) Mixtures can be fairly easily taken back apart. Note: Look at the next slide to see ways to take mixtures apart. 2) If no chemical reaction occurred when you combined the substances together, then it is a mixture. Note: Look at the next slide after that to see ways to determine if a chemical reaction occurred. Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science How to separate apart mixtures Four examples By hand By filtration By distillation By magnetism Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science How do I know if a chemical reaction occurred or not? Remember: compounds are formed during chemical reactions. So if there is no chemical reaction, then it IS NOT a compound Note: Below are common indicators of chemical reactions Explosion Heat or Light Color change Smoke or Gas Sound (sizzle, snap, crackle, pop, bang, or boom) Fizzing or Foaming Precipitate is formed If you don't see one or more of these indicators, then it probably IS NOT a chemical reaction. .
