Part IV: Considering the Message
Consider the following questions in determining what gendered messages the magazine you have selected is
sending to its target audience.
Question
1. What do you consider to be the overall message that
this magazine is sending its target audience? Why?
Answer
The overall message to men of all ages is that sports
are a key factors in a mans world. Sports Illustrated
allows a man to be a man and its something that he
would understand meaning SPORTS.
2. What are the possible implications (i.e. effects on the
reader) of the message that you uncovered through
your content analysis?
The overall implications on the reader are that by
reading this magazine it will get the reader more
interested into these different sports teams.
3. In Chapter 8 of Media, Gender and Identity: An
Introduction, David Gauntlett discusses men’s
magazines. Find at least one idea discussed by
Gauntlett that you found to be TRUE based on your
content analysis.
In chapter 8, I found the idea of men’s magazines
reflecting “fear” of intimacy or commitment to be
true because, unlike women’s magazines, the reader
will not find any articles inside referring to love and
relationship or 10 ways on how to keep a woman.
When you look inside of a male’s magazine you
would think that women or intimacy never exists.
4. In Chapter 8 of Media, Gender and Identity: An
Introduction, David Gauntlett discusses men’s
magazines. Find at least one idea discussed by
Gauntlett that you found to be FALSE based on your
content analysis.
5. Did anything surprise you when completing your
content analysis?
In chapter 8, I found it to be false all men’s
magazine contain nudity or semi-nude photos of
women. There are several genres of men’s magazine
and there are many of them that do not contain
pictures of women at all.
I am surprised that there were not any ads with sexy
women in this magazine unlike a woman’s
magazine where there are a few pictures of adoring
men.
