OAK Rules of Training
•
•
•
•
•
1. Attend all of the practices:
10 minutes early is on time.
Consistently making it to practice is like making small deposits in to the
bank. Slowly but surely your investment begins to grow.
Comparing practices to school classes, each session offers new
opportunities for learning and growth. However, in swimming there is
compound interest with regard to fitness at the cellular level. These
physical developments add on to each other and begin to snowball.
2. Do 100% of the workout:
Miss nothing. Do every set, every repeat & every warm up / warm down
If you go to the bathroom, try to make up what you missed. Again,
comparing it to school, you would try to make up what you have missed or
you will be left out on the test. In swimming, the tests are the meets!
OAK Rules of Training
3.Don’t do anything in practice that you
wouldn’t do in a meet:
• This includes legal starts & turns
• Finish with speed, no drifting in & lifting head
before touching the wall
• No touching the bottom or pulling on lane
ropes
OAK Rules of Training

•
4. Read the clock:
Enhances swimmers ability to know how fast they
are swimming.
Develops sense of pace and ability to negative
split.
5. Swimmers must learn to:
Descend on command by the clock (not by feel)
Negative Split
Monitor stroke counts
Hold breathing patterns
OAK Rules of Training
6. Make all of the intervals:
• Be aware of what you are being asked to accomplish. Be a leader in
striving to make all of the intervals. Always get your times from the
clock so you are aware of your results in the set.
• Challenge yourself to go on faster intervals while performing great
technique.
•
7. Maximize all the sets:
• Understand the difference between completing/existing in a set
and really getting the most out of the set. What is the set designed
to accomplish; how fast are you being asked to go; have you
exhausted yourself to get to the goal etc.
• Swim each set as though it were your last set of the day.
OAK Rules of Training
8. Swimmers are responsible for set up & take
down of pool
• Develops swimmer’s understanding that it’s their
swimming.
• This includes personal as well as general
equipment.
9. Swimmers must ask permission to leave the
pool deck:
• Coaches need to know where the athletes are at
all times.
10. No watches to be worn in workout:
• It potentially contributes to muscle
imbalances which may lead to should issues
11. Perfect practice makes perfect:
• The way you practice is the way you will race.
Habits are formed over time; unfortunately
this includes bad habits. What habits are you
forming?
