Project Brief:
It's a main project in " FUNDAMENTALS OF
LEARNING AND TEACHING-TCHG 502, ETCT 503"
course related to American University in Cairo,
Graduate School of Education, under
supervision of Dr. Mervat El Dib in May 2011.
This project is about to "Unit Planning" using
one of the most important strategies in how do
we learn which is "BACKWARD DESIGN"
We hope that this project meets your needs.

Introduction:
Teaching the importance of small-business
ownership to students through class projects
gives students hands-on experience in starting
and running a business.
Projects can teach students the fundamentals
of small-business ownership while teaching
them how to write a business plan, how to
hire staff, how to market a business and how
to create a budget and financial statements.
We are here to give our students the best
possible real life work experience allow students
to learn about the day-to-day functions of
entrepreneurs and small business owners, how to
start a business, design it and learn from multiple
failures and successes of running their own
virtual small business
Through the unit students will be able to

incorporate their computer knowledge,
English writing and presentation skills,.
This unit is designed for grade eight.

Proposal:
As a young entrepreneur, your task is to present a proposal to present your business project
plan for your school's open day.
your audience is the members of the school board responsible for approving the open day
activities.
you have more than a challenge.
you need to decide your product and show why you choose it with evidences.
you need to include an estimated cost price and a selling price with the profit stated.
you need to present an advertisement plan including persuasive writings ex: slogan, flyers.
you need to present a written formal essay to be presented to the committee along with a
presentation using any preferable technology.
your proposal needs to follow the criteria for a god formal writing along with a persuasive tone
to influence their judgment in your favor .you should include clear and accurate calculations
supported by statistics and graphs.
Bake Sale:
The school is having a summer camp to turkey & you will hold a bake sale to fund raise your
camp.
your customers are your school mates and school teachers.
you have many challenges...
you need to have a homemade recipe for one and multiple servings
you need to buy your ingredients in a way to minimize the cost price.
It is important to offer a variety of goods. Plan some items that will be single-servings, some
items that feed a small number and some for a large group. Ideas that can be split into
different serving sizes include: cookies, brownies, cupcakes and doughnuts. Ideas for a larger
group can also include: loaves of homemade bread, cakes and pies.
Because they are all home made goods make sure to have special offers to make sure that all
your goods are sold by the end of the day … think about last hour offers.

your bake sale should be professional ,with all dealings well documented and calculated.
Documentary:
The school announces a competition between the groups who are holding the
bake sale to make a documentary video on your project:
a) you will show your product and the reasons behind choosing it.
b) the aims of your project.
c) the importance of running a small business.
d) you will use the wiki space to document your video.
e) you will present this to your colleagues who are interested to start a small
business.
f) your project will be assessed by Math, English and Computer teachers.

W: Where Unit is going
In this unit, we will learn all the necessary knowledge needed to start and run your
small business "the bake sale".
You will learn how to write formal and informal persuasive writings.
You will learn how to duplicate recipes, chooses the best prices for raw materials, how
to calculate prices after adding profits or after discounts, assess your overall profit or
loss.
You will learn how to use modern technology to facilitate your work and promote your
product.
H: Hook the students
Present the students with a homemade pizza; decide how many slices we need for
massive servings and how many pizzas need to be baked.
Discuss the recipe and make the necessary calculations.
Provide a price list of raw materials from various markets and allow them to decide
which items will be bought and from where.
Discuss your product prices
design a questionnaire to decide which goods appeal more to your customers ,
analyze and display the data graphically.
Persuade your school board into approving your bake sale ideas, and how it is
different from persuading your friend to buy your product.

their bake sale, what is their customer's budget for food per day.

Day 8: Microsoft word
students will use microsoft word to write the formal letter for the school board
they will print it out to be viewed and revised by the English teacher.
Day 9: Microsoft publisher
they will use microsoft publisher to design a procure for their product
End of the lesson assessment can include games from ict games
Day 10: Microsoft Excel
they use the excel spread sheets to organize and represent the data they collected from
their survey.
they should keep record of their business over time to assess their revenue at the end of
the task.
Day 11: Microsoft PowerPoint
Design a power point presentation for your school board to promote to your business plan.
Day 12:Document the project
students will document their project experience from the very beginning using videos and
audio recordings and post it on the wiki space.
