Q4: Do you have a client or donor that you've worked with who has a
special story about their philanthropy that you want to tell?
A new client expressed an interest in placing money towards retirement planning in what they described as
the final pushbefore retiring in 2019. However, the clients didn’t know how to invest the cash. It turns out
that the husband serves on several nonprofit boards and has a keen interest in supporting charitable
causes as well. They were also in a very high tax bracket in 2014. I went to work and ultimately
recommended they set up a charitable remainder unitrust (a version known as a charitable pension plan•
).
For the next five years, we recommended that they place $100,000 of extra cash into this trust, building up
the value during the husband’s last five working years. Then after he retires, the trust will begin to make
payments back to the clients for the rest of their lives. The amount of the payments is 6% of the trust value
at the time. So if the trust is worth $600,000 in five years due to investment growth, the clients would
receive $36,000 per year (6% x $600,000). In the course of making the contributions to the trust over the
five year period, the clients will receive income tax deductions totaling over $150,000. Over the course of
their lives they will receive around $900,000 of income (much of it tax-free), and will make a future gift to
charity estimated at over $575,000 when they both pass away. - Anonymous
