So if A = 10 then the other side of the equal sign (5 + 0.5d) must also equal 10. This equation states that 85 and 70 + 15 are equal. If I subtract 15 from the left had side of the original equation, what do I have to do to maintain equality? If I add 10 to the right hand side of the equation, what do I have to do to maintain equality? If I divide the left hand side of the equation by 5, what do I have to do to maintain equality? If I multiply the right hand side of the equation by 4, what do I have to do to maintain equality? In this kingdom the ambassadors carry diplomatic pouches. The content of the pouches are unknown except by the ambassadors. Ambassador Noah wants to send one dollar gold coins to another country. His friend Laura, who is a mathematician, helps him devise a scheme based on equality for keeping track of the number of one dollar coins in each pouch. Each pouch contains the same number of one dollar gold coins. The number of gold coins on both sides of the equality sign is the same, but some coins are hidden in the pouches.
