Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not
perceive it? (Isaiah 43:18-19)
Nothing seems as hopeful as the idea of a "New Year." At the root of all
the resolutions and vows of self-improvement is the deep desire that now,
at last, things will be different. What those "things" are will obviously be
different person to person. Most focus on our outward lives: perhaps an
exercise program or a diet, maybe a different job, or possibly even a move
to another place. Some will be more inward-centered: a commitment to be
more forgiving, more generous, or more patient.
What they all have in common, however, is that they are self-directed.
We see ourselves as the engineers of our own progress, and year after
year, we outline a program to achieve this or that goal. And as they say in
the commercials, "your results may vary." Some individuals are seemingly
possessed with impressive reserves of the will to accomplish their
objectives, while others experience defeat before taking the first step.
The truly Good News of Jesus Christ, however, is that, as Paul put it,
"If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away behold! the new has come." (2 Corinthians 5:17) Being made new is not
something we must do for ourselves; instead, when we entrust our lives to
Christ through faith, God himself makes us new.
Becoming a new creation does not happen overnight, and it often feels
that we are making no progress at all. We can also hinder that progress
when we deliberately walk in ways that are contrary to God's will,
revealed for us in Scripture. But because we know that this is God's work,
and he will not fail in bringing it to fulfillment, we can press on with joy.
Happy New Year!
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Ed
